The late Walter Donlan was one of the finest social historians of the ancient Greek world. Philologically accomplished and alert to insights that could be drawn from the social sciences, Donlan produced a number of highly accomplished and influential essays over his distinguished career -- most notably on power relations and culture -- extending from the Dark Age period through to the Classical Era. This highly original volume reproduces his major book, "The Aristocratic Ideal in Ancient Greece" (1980), and includes in supplement eight of Donlan's most important essays. For anyone seeking deeper knowledge of the Homeric world, and of the shifting political and ideological currents of ancient Hellas more generally, the nuanced and evocative scholarship of Walter Donlan provides a richly rewarding learning opportunity.
