About the Author
Johan J. Bolhuis is professor of Behavioural Biology at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. His main research interests are in the behavioral, cognitive and neural mechanisms of learning, memory and development, in particular song learning in birds. He has been an editor of the leading journal Animal Behaviour and President of the Royal Dutch Zoological Society.

Simon Verhulst is assistant professor of Behavioural Biology at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His research interests have included ecological immunology, avian life history evolution and avian energetics, all with the aim to study the interplay between function and mechanism of behavior. In 2004 he was elected as member of 'The Young Academy', the junior section of the Dutch Royal Society. He has been an Associate Editor for the Journal of Animal Ecology since 2007.

Contrary to conservative opinion that suggests that Hollywood is anti-religious, Greeley and Bergesen find just the opposite. Ordinary movies, not explicitly about religion and not made by particularly religious individuals often demonstrate some basic religious theme, point, or message. God in the Movies does not judge or approve, recommend or criticize; the authors simply alert the reader to the great variety of metaphors for God, angels, heaven, and hell, from beautiful women to white light at the end of the tunnel to Groundhog Day. They are not concerned with explicitly religious movies. This is not a study of Ben Huror The Last Temptations of Christ, but rather of ordinary mass-release movies, including Field of Dreams, Always, All That Jazz, Commandments, Babette's Feast, Fearless, Breaking the Waves, Jacob's Ladder, Flatliners, Ghost, Pale Rider, Star Wars, 2001, Dogma, and even Japanimation, like Ghost in the Shell.

The authors' vivid explication of various cinematic metaphors for God is accompanied by an analysis of what these movies tell about our sociological attitudes toward life and death. They also discuss the social conditions that give rise to various kinds of imagery and forms of movies. In a real sense, this book is for both the professional concerned with religion, sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, media and cinema studies, and the layperson interested in how popular movies also contain religious imagery.

About the Author

Andrew M. Greeley (1928-2013) was a Catholic priest, best-selling novelist, and sociologist. He was professor of social science at the University of Chicago and member of its National Opinion Research Center (NORC). His books include Faithful Attraction, The Denominational Society, Unsecular Man, Death and Beyond, and The Church and the Suburbs.

Albert J. Bergesen is professor of sociology at the University of Arizona. He has written extensively on the sociology of art and culture. He is editor of Studies of the Modern World-System; Cultural Analysis, with Robert Wuthnow, Edith Kurzweil, and J. Hunter; and America's Changing Role in the World-System, with T. Boswell.

Excellent resource for a course on seeing evidence of God and the spiritual in non-religious movies. The book introduced me to movies I would not otherwise have viewed. Greeley is always a good read and expresses an insight not seen elsewhere.

A hodgepodge of criticism and theology

In God and the Movies, Bergson and Greeley posit that God is portrayed in micro and macro ways in film. The macro portrayals of God are often epic Science Fiction and Fantasy movies, Star War being a prime example. The macro God is also cast in films with elements of magical realism they say:

"The God of magical realism is a God of enormous power, a God who can make bells ring even when there are no bells, a God how causes a spring garden to bloom overnight despite the snow, a God who saves a drowning man in a body of a whale, a God who can send the dead back to free a survivor of paralyzing grief."

At first, I was lost in a discussion of magical realism because I only know this term in the literary sense, in the writings of Angela Carter or Garcia Marquez, but the writers go on to include films such as Like Water for Chocolate and What Dreams May Come, which seem more compatible with the term. Bergson and Greely's point is that god-like forces, and evil forces, are revealed in both small and fantastic situations in films like Star Wars. The small revelations, like the moment "[w]hen Luke turn off his targeting computer and opened himself to pray for God's help," as Overstreet writes, taught us how to pray. An then there's the big picture, which Anker writes about:

"Obi-Wan is after nothing less than the defeat of Darkness[sic]12 itself, the metaphysical power that seeks to destroy all that is good in the world."

Additionally, Anker has a nice way of explaining the spiritual significance of the trilogy of the 1970 and 80s in contrast with the 2000s trilogy: "The future of the Star Wars saga lies in its past... [T]he first of the original trilogy to be filmed showed how light comes out of darkness. The trilogy now underway shows how darkness emerges from light, how people and societies come to lose harmony and hope." Why is it, though, that even in epic films the largest displays of spirituality are usually the darkest ones-- the portrayal of evil? Why is it that God does not, in the world we live in, reveal his light in miracles or any other heuristic events? Why must Christians insist of things like the resurrection, the virgin birth, and the intelligent design of the universe? Or as Lars Von Trier13 wonders ,

"The general assumption is that all people are able to differentiate more or less equally between good and evil. But if this is the case, why does the world look like it does? Why have all the good intentions of my parents come to nothing. And why do my own good intentions lead to nothing?"

I'll leave these question aside, beside having just asked them. But I must point out that majority of Christian criticism is not about the beauty and truth of God in film, but rather about the absence of God.

Best Read of 2015

Slept was lost. Work was put aside. Smiles were huge. Laughter was loud. Heart was broken. Heart was healed. Tears were shed. Spirits were lifted. Love was real. I don’t really remember the last time a book affected me this much, but this book did all kinds of things to my heart, and there it has lodged itself forever.

I cannot fully explain all the emotions I had for this book. THE. FEELS. GUYS. The tears were just flowing during the last three chapters, which I think is the best part because I’m such a huge fan of perfect endings. I have loved this book from beginning to end. It was unique and uplifting. I will admit that it has been a long time since a book has made me feel smiley and giddy and all the feels of just wanting to read the book but hug it at the same time. I wanted to simultaneously finish it and make it last forever, which I guess I can by re-reading it in the future.

Kelly Oram has always been a favorite author of mine. I’ve literally read and re-read all of her released books, and she now has 10 under her belt and more coming, including this one. But I expected this one to be different. She said it herself. Also, she wrote it with her husband, which was pretty cool. And it didn’t even feel like it was written by two people because the whole tone of the book was consistent throughout. I guess their marriage is beautiful both in relationship and authorship. I haven’t read anything from Jonathan Harrow, but I do believe that they should collaborate more often.

Like I said, this book is different from Kelly Oram’s previous books, and it is a really good different. I still felt like I was reading from her, but it just felt so much more. It was funny and quirky with an interesting and entertaining set of characters. It pulls on the heartstrings with love, grief, and everything in between. It’s kind of strange and beautiful that your happy and hurting in one chapter or a couple. Joni, Underway was just book magic.

Now, I was debating whether I should say anything about the characters or the plot, but I feel like those should be left as surprises. I’m a big believer in going in blind, and I swear that this book would be so much better with it. The cover and synopsis are there anyway so I guess you already have an idea what it’s all about. I know that the synopsis might feel like this is something that has written before, but believe me, because I have read a lot of contemporaries and maybe some similar concepts, it is extraordinary.

Totally blown away by this one!

For me the creation of a good book is a bit like magic. I mean I kinda get how one does it, but being able to put a wonderful boo together? Well, as I said: Magic. I honestly am in awe of many authors and simply baffled by their ability to create wonder. As we all know, I am not a writer, never will be so it's beyond my reach. Why am I telling you this?
Well, simply Joni, Underway is one of those books that left me... touched, in wonderment and awe- and possibly somewhat changed.
It's no secret that I am a fan of Oram's books... But this one is not just hers. This is co-authored with her husband Jonathan Harrow. I never read any of his works - an oversight I shall correct soon. And here comes the reason why I was telling you the latter- I can not imagine how people co-write books! I am fascinated by it. Many collaborations work with dual or multiple POV- makes sense. But see- this one was written from just Joni's POV.. So how I have been wondering do you do that? It's a far cry from my imagination of how authors work- which is alone with their laptop at all hours of the day... Kelly Oram kindly gave us a glimpse on how she and Harrow did it. I shall not fangirl about any longer and get to my review:

The writing style is more somber than I was used to by Oram. But the content is more somber as well. I kinda expected cute and lighthearted romance- though I don't know why retrospectively. And I got something much deeper instead. Its had plenty of Oram's wonderful humor and sass - and to my delight it had wonderful descriptions, beautiful moments and such depths it touched me somewhere deep inside my stone cold heart.
I honestly can't tell you how much I loved the prose in this- because I find it impossible to dissect this novel- it became way to personal.

At the beginning I was kinda taken aback by how much I actually disliked Joni. I found her selfish, self-involved and melodramatic. I couldn't believe the self-pity party. This huge thing happened and she sat there just feeling sorry for herself. The way she was with her family? Atrocious at best! And then she embarks on her journey... and EVERYTHING changes.
The journey was beyond wonderful. I have no words to describe the trip, the characters and all the things that happen. I just gulped it up and wanted more!
What I can say is, that being someone who met her husband on her travels and has traveled all over the world for several years with said guy, Joni, Underway got it right. The traveling bits- amazing! The changes one goes through, the bonding, the heart all of it is there. And that's why I can't be objective nor make a decent review.. because this is one of the most beautiful and most touching books I have ever read...
Now don't misunderstand me.. It's not mooshy or uber-emo. It simply spoke to me. It is well written and has an interesting storyline. But mostly it has fantastic character building. I fell in love with each and every quirk of the cast. It was amazing to see them bond and to slowly see different sides to each one of them.
The romance is slow and extremely sweet, heartfelt and well swoon-worthy in a very subtle way. Reid -sighs- is a dream, with his faults and all. Joni and Reid are magic.
My only little thing that I found a bit disappointing: the end. Well not the end as such, but it all suddenly just worked out and was sorted.. It felt a wee bit rushed. But it's a teeny little thing and frankly it did not take away the happy cloud I was on.
Joni, Underway left me unable to read anything - I was still stuck in that world and all I wanted is grab my guy and go travel the world again.

Incredibly beautiful book! Possibly the best release in 2015 but definitely one of my favorite books ever.

Very Moving

(3.5 Stars) The story begins with a losing win for Joni in a critical college softball game and that seems to be a theme throughout this coming of age story. Joni immerses herself in school and sports, while distancing herself from her family. Joni comes across as very mature, but she's still growing up. The party scene, hook ups, drama, and outward appearances aren't her thing and her friends are always urging her to find her thing. Life as she knows it changes completely when her brother suddenly dies. A big trip that he had planned falls into her lap and at the spur of the moment, she goes in his place--a trip that changes her whole life and helps her find her groove.

Captain Reid is young, good looking, and full of wisdom from his vast life experiences in such a short existence. The handful of people on board are very unique, different, and there for their own reasons, which are gradually made known. This unlikely crew forms a bond through their good times and trials and that bond wrapped itself around my heart. We have an interracial couple, two old timer Korean war vets who are very salty and crude, yet like big teddy bears, a young teen who is trying to figure herself out, and Joni and the captain. Each person brings something to the story through their personalities and lessons learned and contributes a lot to Joni's overall growth.

I really enjoyed the setting--a cruise from Maine to Norway--and everything that happens in between. I grew to like the characters a lot and loved watching friendships form. The ending is full of twists that had my emotions on a roller coaster, leaving me unsure how to feel. Great story by this husband-wife duo!

Of course, I wish there was less language and innuendo, but with the types of characters involved, those things made it more realistic. It wouldn't have been the same story without those elements.

Content: moderate language (a few words used a lot--not the offensive one); mild violence/moments of peril; moderate romantic elements (non descriptive talk of hook ups, 2-3 non-descriptive scenes involving no clothes, kissing/making out, hinting at same sex attraction). Technically clean, especially for the genre (new adult).

Who says teens don't read these days?

Female? You need this book!

I bought this as a stocking filler for my teenage daughter and I may as well have not bothered with the iPad. (It didn't come out of the box till she finished the book.) This is a harmonious and inspirational blend of self examination techniques, psychology and love tips, cleverly wrapped around the Twilight series.

Do you remember the Cathy and Clare page in the Jackie magazine? Louise Deacon must surely have had a hand in that and if she doesn't have her own problems page somewhere then that needs addressing.

As a single mother myself (where was Louise Deacon when I needed her?) I pored over the pages (in secret, obviously) and I reckon I am now set up to take on the dating sites. My Edward is out there (Jacob? Pah!) and, Deacon's bible my my side (in a brown wrapper, clearly), I am ready to roll.

Buy ten of these books and give them to your children, nieces, and god daughters. In fact, make it twenty because their mothers will steal them.

A cracking good read. And it might just change your life.

The deeper meaning behind the most popular romance book of our time

I read this book partly because I have always been interested in the popularity of romance, from Jane Austen to Mills & Boon. At aged 26 I thought that I would be immune to a young adult book about vampires (I was a fan of the L.J Smith Vampire Diaries books when I was 12 so this was nothing new) - but I was amazed by how quickly I devoured the Twilight books, and I was interested in what this book had to say. So many girls I know of all ages, including married women in their forties, had been sent similarly crazy.

Reading 'Twilight, True Love and You,' a few years later opened my eyes to the psychology behind what was going on. If anything I read it even quicker than the original Twilight books, and by the end instead of feeling resentful of my less-than-Twilight-perfect love life, it made me remember the original reasons I fell in love with my boyfriend. It's a funny, easy-to-read book with lots of serious, important messages and I can honestly say this book made me a happier and wiser person. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone.

An Incredible Author

Jim Harrison was a man that lived large and truly enjoyed life, if not Republicans. His longtime publisher, Grove Press, has released a collection of essays on food, wine and women this month, reflecting the one year anniversary of Jim’s death. A Really Big Lunch was an entertaining read and a nice sequel to his 1992 The Raw and the Cooked: Adventures of a Roving Gourmand.

Connoisseurs of fine wine, from wine makers to wine drinkers will enjoy his fixation with wine, and especially French wines. It was always curious that he seemed not to drink American wines, and yet only 30 minutes from his winter casita in Patagonia, Arizona, are numerous wineries, including two world-class wineries, where at least one, Callaghan Vineyards has exported wine to France.

And then there are the stories about food. This reader agrees with Jim when it comes to oysters, 4-inch ribeye’s, porterhouses, pastas, but not much else. He seemed to enjoy certain animal body parts that would for this reader, be even difficult to look at. Jim loved cooking, and it does not appear that he ate food raw, such as fish, perhaps because of his love of sauces and seasonings.

I was fortunate to meet Jim, after a writer friend of Jim’s, made the arrangement for Jim to sign my “Harrison Collection” at the Wagon Wheel Saloon in Patagonia. Jim’s only condition was that the signing be done outdoors. Over vodka shooters we had a very engaging conversation while he signed. Within a minute, it felt like I was talking with someone that I knew my entire life. When he asked where I went to school, I said my university was in Nebraska, but not for a MFA degree, a degree that he would have had no shortage of comments.

He loved talking about Nebraska, as he lived there while writing Dalva and The Road Home. He wanted to know if I frequented the titty bars in Lincoln. Well no, but he did and indicated that Nebraska coeds were the best. I was glad that he did not ask which political party did I favor, because my answer might have halted the signing.

Chef Mario Batali did a wonderful tribute to Jim as an introduction to the book. Mario flew in to Patagonia for one of Jim’s birthdays to cook a special dinner for Jim and friends. What a feast that must have been. America lost an incredible author with the passing of Jim, and yet he left some very special books that will have continued repeated readings!

People who have diabetes are vulnerable to nerve and vascular damage that can result in loss of protective sensation in the feet, poor circulation, and poor healing of foot ulcers. All of these conditions contribute to the high amputation rate in people with diabetes. The absence of nerve and vascular symptoms, however, does not mean that a patient’s feet are not at risk. Risk of ulceration cannot be assessed without careful examination of the patient’s bare feet. Early identification of foot problems and early intervention to prevent problems from worsening can avert many amputations. Good foot care, therefore, is an essential part of diabetes management – for patients as well as for health care providers. This kit is designed for primary care and other health care providers who counsel people with diabetes about preventive health care practices, particularly foot care. “Feet Can Last a Lifetime” is designed to help you implement four basic steps for preventive foot care in your practice: Early identification of the high risk diabetic foot, Early diagnosis of foot problems, Early intervention to prevent further deterioration that may lead to amputation, and Patient education for proper care of the feet and footwear.

Good grief, what a struggle to read! Content took a lot of finding

Oh. My. Goodness.

I left a review on another of their publications: Take Care of Your Feet for a Lifetime and that was bad enough, but the formatting on this is something to behold (or preferably not). I bought both at the same time which was a mistake, because having seen one I'd not have got the other.

What are they playing at? It took a long time to dig through to find the nuggets - and there was some good information - and I gave up a couple of times to have a rest.

The formatting was all over the place, it was hard to tell where one section ended and another started, there was lots of red writing, and many words were broken off half way to start on the next line. Really, I would expect better from the American Association of Diabetic Educators.

To add insult to injury, I found the information from Take Care of Your Feet for a Lifetime in here as well, so the other purchase was a waste of money.

What's the point of having good information if it's so cunningly concealed? The fact that there is some in there means this got three and not the one or two stars I feel like giving.
