From Here, by John Faithful Hamer

In one of those amazing essays that made her famous—the one that made Claude Lévi-Strauss a household name in the English-speaking world—Susan Sontag rightly observed that: “Most serious thought in our time struggles with the feeling of homelessness.” If From Here has an overarching message, it's that these feelings of homelessness are understandable but not insurmountable. We no longer have to live like royalty in exile. We can take back the Kingdom: fall in love with the earth beneath our feet. We can make any place home if we wish to, if we choose to. But to do so we're going to have to slow down and get to know, really know, the living things around us. We need to shut up and listen to them. Give them our full attention. Then, like Adam in the Garden, we have to call them by their rightful names. Perhaps it's then that we'll realize, at long last, that the world's still enchanted. And we never really left the Garden.

Short pieces, snappy tone, searing insights and sharp questions
By Vincent Lauzon
The fun thing about this book is many of the ideas discussed therein are fairly complex, but they're all expressed in very short bursts -- concise, concrete essays where Hamer is just as likely to allude to Orange Is the New Black as to the Nicomachean Ethics. So you can read a bit, nod in companionable agreement or furious outrage, stop and pace and think about it -- and the rest of the book'll keep. It's street philosophy, in street (and sometimes gutter) language, often more about questions than answers. When Hamer does believe he has a point, he lets you know and no mistake. When he's not so sure, he's not too proud to wonder about things aloud and give the reader the tools to come up with an answer on his or her own.
Solid comic writing too.

From Here to There, and From There Straight to us
By Jordan Tessier
From Here is a book that Hamer uses to represent the everyday action you can observe in Montreal, but yet in a humorous and true way. The aphorisms included throughout the short anecdotes and poems that Hamer wrote in this book are astonishingly convincing and yet so deep that you have to read them a second time in order to fully understand their meanings.

You might disagree with some of the clearer statements that Hamer establishes in the book (like me) but the more you read about a particular section that reflects his “at-first-banal-ideas”, the more you actually learn to contemplate and accept all the little things pointed out to eventually be faced with the truth. This truth might be an absolute revelation for you as it can apply to many different fields of our everyday life, many of which can only make true sense in a certain place and time. I can assure you that you will feel bad if you buy FLASH passes at La Ronde in the future after reading the book and you will definitely know what I mean by that if you do!

The overall content of the book is brought up to you fairly fast and is itself quite complicated. Hamer introduces his ideas and thoughts through very short passages that can vary from social issues allusions to fictional little short stories and poems. The fact that he does that is, in my opinion, the only aspect of the book that makes it (sometimes) hard to read, but it gives the book some life by jumping from a subject to a completely different one, keeping you on your toes. The structure and choices of the sections order was cautiously well made by Hamer, because every passage was sort of random but fun to read and they would all somehow relate to a same idea by the use of different techniques and aphorisms at the end of the chapter.

Just to give you an idea of how complex the book is, I already read both Blue Notes and Twilight of the Idlers (which are the two books incorporated into From Here) but I did not read “them” the same as when I read From Here. I believe that this is due to the fact that Hamer’s ideas in the book can be perceived differently. Don’t get me wrong; what I mean is that the ideas he proposes can be interpreted in many different ways depending on your state of mind, which is a good thing! This lets you comprehend the book with respect to you and only you, therefore demonstrating how his writing can directly touch the reader’s soul itself, and there has not been many books I read that were able to do this as powerfully as Hamer did!

My favorite parts of the book itself were the quotes Hamer included at the beginning of most sections of the book. These quotes include many authors and famous philosophers going from Michel De Montaigne to Nassim Nicholas Taleb, often letting you diverge in your thoughts about the meaning of the quote before even starting to read the section. I found that those outside references to other authors were really well made and still relevant to what he was explaining or asking in the section (because a lot of questions are asked to us, the reader, but still remain unanswered!).

If you are the type of reader that doesn’t take the time to admire the beauty of a, at first, incomprehensible idea, then this book is not for you, because to really appreciate the whole meaning of what Hamer is trying to teach us, you have to think. And God knows how much Hamer thought about the unanswered questions he asks us, the blunt and solid statements he throws at us.

this good author, with the last name Hamer knows how ...
By Moin
Hamer, is a thinker, writer, and a pain-in-the-ass -- all at once -- who forces us to think, on matters that we would rather not Because:
(1) They take too much effort
(2) The topics are at once sensitive & nettlesome
(3) Just thinking about these topics, say an ungrateful brute, makes us livid with rage.

And, this good author, with the last name Hamer knows how to write his thoughts, both with the delicacy of a Ball Peen Hammer nuance where needed and that of a Sledge Hammer to forcefully drive home a point, as he sees fit.
Prof. Hamer, oh, yes, he is a Professor, certainly has done his reading over the years. And, of course, in Canada they pay people to think and read, I would presume. Whereas in America, I was fired for reading and thinking and not turning screws on a widget by a boss who was Donald Trump like in every way (size to looks to lack of brains.) This is a true story.

Prof. Hamer's erudition and depth -- which spans from the Ancient Greek to Contemporary North American Philosophers -- is exemplary. He expands and expounds this philosophy, and with a pragmatic flourish applies it to every-day-problems like Sam Walton (WalMart's everyday price!) that we face at work with difficult people, angry people, bozo's, boozers, and more.

This Ball Peen Hamer (note: one "M") is flippant yet reverent when it matters. He doesn't give a s***, or like how I like to say (Quebec'ers, or "Québécoids" pardon my French), "a flying freak" to anybody. Even if I have been kind to this Sledge Hamer in my review, if we were to meet on the street, and if a disagreement were to ensue -- say, on the stupidity of dogmatic religion -- Hamer will not hesitate to box my ears and probably crush my nuts. (Hey! Hope not the latter. There is some life left in them. smile emoticon Of course, I was a pretty good welterweight boxer, back in the day. So who gets to whose nuts first is beyond the scope of this review.

But one thing I must say, this book has both left and right hooked me. And I am unable to put it down.
