Modern Classics the Divided Self: An Existential Study In Sanity And Madness (Penguin Modern Classics), by R D Laing

His groundbreaking exploration of the nature of madness, R.D. Laing's The Divided Self illuminated the nature mental illness, making the mysteries of the mind comprehensible to a lay audience. This Penguin Modern Classics edition includes an introduction by Professor Anthony S. David. First published in 1960, this watershed work aimed to make madness comprehensible, and in doing so revolutionized the way we perceive mental illness. Using case studies of patients he had worked with, psychiatrist R. D. Laing argued that psychosis is not a medical condition, but an outcome of the 'divided self', or the tension between the two personas within us: one our authentic, private identity, and the other the false, 'sane' self that we present to the world. Laing's radical approach to insanity offered a rich existential analysis of personal alienation and made him a cult figure in the 1960s, yet his work was most significant for its humane attitude, which put the patient back at the centre of treatment. R.D. Laing (1927-1989), one of the best-known psychiatrists of modern times, was born in Glasgow, Scotland. R.D. Laing's writings range from books on social theory to verse, as well as numerous articles and reviews in scientific journals and the popular press. His many publications include The Divided Self, Self and Others, Interpersonal Perception, The Politics of Experience and The Bird of Paradise, and Madness and Folly. If you enjoyed The Divided Self, you might like Sigmund Freud's The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. Review
"Dr. Laing is saying something very important indeed. . . . This is a truly humanist approach."
—Philip toynbee in the Observer

"It is a study that makes all other works I have read on schizophrenia seem fragmentary. . . . The author brings, through his vision and perception, that particular touch of genius which causes one to say Yes, I have always known that, why have I never thought of it before?'"
—Journal of Analytical Psychology

Fantastic.
By adam christopher
This is an excellent and entertaining book. You don't have to be a schizophrenic or psychology researcher to find value within its pages. I randomly ordered this book a few years ago - having never heard of Laing and having never read anything in this genera - and it is now one of my favorite books that I have ever read. Highly recommended for anyone with even the slightest interest. Laing takes case studies of an extremely complex phenomenon - the divided self- and breaks it down logically to such an extent that even comatose schizophrenia becomes completely understandable

Where "everything is suffused with nothingness"
By Phyllis Antebi Ph.D
The divided self like the divided mind, is an abstraction and like all things human, requires our compassion to understand. While The Divided Self is not a new book (around since 1959/1960) it remains to this day a ground breaking psychological study.
Who as a psychologist, philosopher, or student of literature has not come across the idea of the schizoid personality? Some even believe it is the plague of our times. For example, you can read, "The Shallows", "The Minimal Self", and "The Culture of Narcissism". This state of deepening fragmentation of the self manifests as the false self system, a sort of borderline psychoses. In this world where everything is "suffused with nothingness", the real self lays hidden just waiting for some penetrating soul to help it discover "It" is not really an "IT" but an "I".

A Classic for a reason.

This should be mandatory reading for Psychology majors, and anyone who wants to work in the mental health field.

On one hand, this is a great book about schizophrenics and their existential issues.

On the other hand, everything in this book also applies to non-psychotic people, and THIS is why this book is so far ahead of others in its field, even for as old as it is. It's too bad not many people read it anymore.
