About the Author
Michael Borden has a Master's Degree in Architecture from SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. He comes from a family of builders, with over 25 years experience in building and/or designing custom residences in California and the Midwest. He is currently involved in Vastu building and design projects worldwide. Michael was drawn to the endeavor of creating this book for the purpose of promoting Vastu Veda and thereby educating designers, architects, builders and homeowners on the potential of a more comfortable, happy and successful life lived in harmoney through the principles of Vastu Veda.

Double Good News - an excellent book on vedic architecture

The bad news is that Mr. Borden's guru, the greatest expert on Vastu (Vedic architecture) passed away in 2011. The good news is double - not only do we have Michael Borden, one of Dr. Sthapati's prime students, available to us, but also Mr. Borden has also brought out an excellent book on Vastu.

Now, I must say that the greatest book on Vastu, at least in modern times, is Dr. Sthapati's "Building Architecture of Sthapatya Veda." However, at least to me, with my limited knowledge of Vastu, the best book is Mr. Borden's new release "Vastu Architecture: Design Theory & Application for Everyday Life."

Without a doubt, Dr. Sthapati's book is deeper, more philosophical and more complete, but I think that Mr. Borden's book is clearer, simpler, better organized and more to the point. Let me put this another way: If you are planning to build a Vastu building, buy Michael Borden's book. If you have any serious interest in Vastu, buy Michael Borden's book.

My wife Mara and I do live in a Vastu house, designed jointly by Mara and Mr. Borden. It is wonderful and has changed the course of my life in a positive direction. Mara and I have about 8 or 9 other books on Vastu. I enjoyed reading "Vastu Architecture" far more than any of the others (10 on a scale of 1 to 10). I learned more from reading his book than all of the other books put together - for example, did you know that a human being is a Vastu structure? Also, Michal Borden's book confirmed what I intuitively knew: that Vastu is a spirit. Each building has a consciousness (or soul) and that soul is either happy or not, depending on how the structure was built, the surroundings, and to what degree the construction process adhered to the ancient Laws of Sthapata Veda.

Everyone interested in Vastu in any way should read Michael Borden's book. Those who want to delve deeply into Vastu should also peruse Dr. Sthapati's volume.

Finally a really great book on Vaastu

There are only two living people who really know Vaastu Shastras in the Western world. Michael Borden is one of them. 99% of the books on the market, even ones written by Indians, are pure hogwash. They are peacemeal at most and filled with superstition unsupported by the ancient texts. Michael's book is fully supported by ancient Vaastu texts. His knowledge comes from a true Vaastu Guru (Shilpi Guru) - the only authentic one of our time - Dr. V. Ganapati Sthapati. While Sthapati passed on this year, Michael is one of the two people in the west that understand this tradition. He is vice chancellor of The American University of Mayonic Science and Technology which teaches Vaastu in an authentic way under the guidence of Sthapati. [...].

Dr. Sthapati's book - Building Architecture of Sthapatya Veda is the King of vaastu books but is not as detailed as Michael's book. In Sthapati's book he cautions the reader to not attempt to build a vaastu house on their own - this is a very wise caution. While Michael's book is very detailed and accurate I urge people to employ him to help with the building process. Building a vaastu house is complicated and requires daily supervision until the walls are up and the roof is on - and windows and doors installed. It takes years to know how to properly design and supervise the building of a proper vaastu house - trying to do it on your own is not something one should undertake.

Michael Borden spent years going to India to learn this topic. He has years of design and building experience. He is not just talking about Vaastu - he practices it as a vaastu architect.

You will learn from this book that Vaastu has nothing to do with moving furniture, putting up yantras, buying little so-called correction devices or any such thing. Don't waste your money buying them. They won't correct faulty vaastu. Vaastu/vastu is nothing short of a rigorous form of architecture that creates buildings that bring well being to those who live in them. If you live in a house that you feel is not supporting you and you can't build a new house then build a back yoard vaastu cottage or temple cottage (small is fine). It will bring peace and well being to you).

If you have any interest in architecture or vaastu in general you will love this book. If you are looking for a quick fix you won't find it here but you will come to really understand Vaastu.How To Build A Backyard Vaastu Temple Cottage

Finally, the best Vastu book on the market

Michael Borden's "Vastu Architecture: Design Theory and Application for Everyday Life" is by far, the best, and perhaps the only, well informed in-depth analysis of traditional Vastu. Vastu means space and the shastras or scriptures affirm that the space we inhabit is fundamental to our welfare. This book offers honest and accurate information that the author, an architect that studied at the Southern Cal Institute of Architecture, learned from years of study with renowned Indian architect, and builder of temples, Ganapati Sthapati, perhaps the most famous contemporary master of Vastu (he has passed away).

Borden avoids the cliches and false premises promoted by Vastu novices or "Vastu experts" who just focus on making a profit, not unlike Feng Shui commercial experts, who divert philosophy from practice. This last premise is fundamental, in my opinion. The adaptation of these practices in the West has brought on aberrations that are merely commercial but do not bring the practitioner to a balanced lifestyle (in the case of Feng Shui), or to spiritual uplifment and material harmony, in the case of Vastu. Borden's book avoids easy promises and clears an immense amount of misinformation and superstition presented in many Vastu studies. He also makes the knowledge accessible to Westeners, whether they are familiar with Vedic culture or not.

About the Author
Many contemporary authors focus only on the Great Pyramid and consider what might be possible. Charles Rigano focuses on the archaeological record to see where it leads him. He has been studying Old Kingdom architecture for 25 years and his earlier articles on the Bent Pyramid interior, Sneferu's pyramid at Meidum, the small subsidiary pyramid recently uncovered near Khufu's Pyramid, and on pyramid building all provided new insights on these old subjects. His ideas and proposals are in keeping with conventional Egyptological thinking. Charles Rigano spent seven years researching and writing this book. He studied the writings of ancient travelers, what early scientists found when they first entered the pyramids and when they uncovered the monuments, and the works of modern Egyptologists. He combined this research with his own on-site observations to form this complete “picture” of the ancient Giza monuments.

A Passion for Pyramids

Like thousands of others, I am an Egyptophile and have studied ancient Egypt for more than two decades. Some of us first became fascinated by mummies, for others Akhenaten was the lure; but many of us developed a passion for pyramids. This preoccupation led us to read all we could find on the subject, and, for those who were able, to visit the monuments themselves. I wish a book like this had been available twenty years ago!

Charles Rigano’s book on the Pyramids of Giza performs a valuable service by drawing together an immense amount of information from sources ranging from the earliest explorers to the latest archaeological discoveries. I will quote a few numbers to show what an enormous contribution he has made on this popular topic. Among his 222 references are many that are out of print or available only in specialized libraries, while his 400+ endnotes testify to the rigor of his research and allow a curious reader to penetrate further into the primary literature.

Rigano supplements his literature review with first-hand observations – made during a number of extended visits – to provide vivid descriptions and a large number of photographs of seldom-seen areas. His decision to devote an entire 220 page book to the three Giza pyramid complexes was made after his long, and often frustrating, study of the available pyramid books. Even the most comprehensive of these treat the entire Giza group in fewer than 30 pages. There is much, much more to learn about the Giza pyramids, and Rigano both provides more information about each pyramid as well as treating the entire plateau as a coherent funerary site developed over the reigns of three Dynasty IV kings. The book includes information about the subsidiary pyramids, temples and causeways, the Sphinx, and building technology. He also offers new ideas about some outstanding mysteries while staying well within the conventional Egyptological canon as supported by archaeological findings.

Anyone who has seen the pyramids, will want to read this book to better understand their own observations and to see what they have missed. Arm-chair travelers will find everything they could want to know in a concise, readable format illustrated with hundreds of excellent photographs and diagrams. If you only buy one more book about pyramids, this should be the one!!

An informative read on pyramid construction

This book about the Giza pyramid complexes is not so much a how or why description but a more a what was done during the building and investigation of these structures.

You won't read if the stone blocks were moved by slaves, hired help, or aliens. And there isn't much conjecture as to the purpose of say the Queen' s Chamber. But there is a notation that a number of the lower courses of blocks are of a different dimension than those above.

I only gave this book four stars due to its graphics. There needs to be more drawings and the black and white photos can be difficult to understand.

The author does an excellent job of researching and presenting information about the Giza Plateau. The book is filled with photographs and diagrams that help explain his assertions.
This is a welcome addition for anyone interested in the Great Pyramids and Sphinx.

Big disappointment

I bought this book with the hope I could use it to make the Stuart that I have better. The book follows the author building his but leaves much to be guessed at. I would like to have seen where a person could get copies of the CAD drawings that the author was using nothing listed. It would have been nice to be able to email the author with guestions concerning where he got the drawings and other items but again no contact information.
The book is great if you want to see someone elses work which is outstanding. I was looking for more of a "How To book" which this is not.

Stuart Tank Book Review

The book has an excellent layout with the photos, but it only provides a quick summary of what the author did to modify his tank. Some of his sources of information he does not share, like where someone can find a source for accurate blueprint/engineering drawings for a M5 Stuart. Some of the upgrades he installed on his model are available from companies that specifically cater to hobbyist who want to upgrade their Stuart Tank Model and you don't need this book to find those companies. I did pick up a few ideas for other model projects I may work on in the future and it is a well written book. If you buy the book beware that the info it provides for a modifying a Stuart is not worth the price if that is your only reason for wanting to purchase it.

However, digging a bit, one will realize that nothing shown is outside the obtainable, and the entire project shows the collimation of skills developed over a lifetime of modeling. Many of the techniques and materials used are at their root basic, but either done on a much larger scale or repeated countless times."

This is a to-die-for compilation of fascinating old stuff from Abitare magazine. Vintage print heaven. Gorgeous tweedy hardcover binding makes the volume look great on the table, too. One of my favorite books.

About the Author
Bruce Tuckman (Ph.D. in Psychology, Princeton University) is the Director of the Social and Cultural Foundations Department in the Ohio State University School of Education. His research interests are motivation and learning strategies for achievement, research methodology, and instructional design. His distinguished career in educational psychology has been marked by numerous publication credits, including the market-leading text RESEARCH METHODS FOR EDUCATION.

David Monetti was Bruce Tuckman's graduate student at Florida State University. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Counseling at Valdosta State University. He remains actively involved with public schools as a researcher and evaluator of school improvement practices. His research interests include psychometrics, psychological effects of Internet usage, self-regulation, and epistemology of learning.

Tuckman is and was brilliant. He ranks as one of the best researchers in education, and every one of his texts are easy reading, well constructed, and orderly designed. I not only like this book as a text it is worthy of general reading by non-educators.

That idea, the idea that human thinking and machine computing are "radically the same," provides the central theme for his illuminating and provocative book about this exciting new field. After a brief but revealing digression in intellectual history, Haugeland systematically tackles such basic questions as: What is a computer really? How can a physical object "mean" anything? What are the options for computational organization? and What structures have been proposed and tried as actual scientific models for intelligence?

In a concluding chapter he takes up several outstanding problems and puzzles -- including intelligence in action, imagery, feelings and personality -- and their enigmatic prospects for solution.

Its philosophical treatment, which includes coverage of automatic formal systems, semantics, and the development of the various theories of thinking, presents an approach taken by few other AI works. The author ties together this philosophical treatment with clear explanations of how computer-based AI efforts operate and what this might hold for us in terms of future potential. Don't judge this book by its cover...

Don't judge this book by its cover-or at least by its title. Haugeland's Artificial Intelligence: The Very Idea does not adequately serve as a general introduction to the conceptual underpinnings and philosophical background of the quest to create an artificial mind. Rather, it focuses on one specific approach to how natural and man-made thought works: "thinking...essentially is rational manipulation of mental symbols." (p. 4) Haugeland plows forward with this as his core assumption, barely noting that some AI researchers see thought from a very different perspective (for example, the connectionists) and others find the whole enterprise fraught with theoretical difficulty (such as Dreyfus).
So Haugeland's story is that of a particular theory of mind that held predominance for several decades (what the author himself dubs "good, old-fashioned artificial intelligence" or "GOFAI", p. 112) but is now gradually being superceded. His introduction to this story concludes with a description of the Turing test and a justification for its use, and a brief statement of the efficacy of describing a system in different-even contradictory-ways through different "organizational levels". (p. 9) Of all the ideas presented in the book, this last one has the greatest promise for applicability beyond GOFAI.
Chapter 1, "The Saga of the Modern Mind", is a condensed bit of intellectual history. Haugeland introduces the philosophical children of the Copernican revolution-Hobbes, Descartes, and Hume-and the ways they grappled with understanding the world of the mental with the ideas that had proven so effective in the physical sciences. We soon encounter the "paradox of mechanical reason": if reason is the meaningful manipulation of symbols, and meanings are not physical entities, then how can machines manipulate them? (p. 39)
Chapter 2 serves as an extended definition of "Automatic Formal Systems", that is, computers. This material is the most challenging in the text, but the important concepts (formal games, digital systems, medium independence, etc.), are well-described, except for finite playability. The students I tutored through this work found it impossible to determine just what point was being made, and so did I.
How does one assign meanings-connections to the "real", outside world-to the symbols that a computer manipulates? This question is taken up in Chapter 3, "Semantics"-and answered, it seems, by sleight-of-hand. Haugeland gives to this the name "the formalist's motto": "if you take care of the syntax, the semantics will take care of itself". (p. 106) Neither I nor my students found this simple resolution at all satisfying. In every example of a formal game that the author presents, whatever semantic interpretation it has is provided from outside the system.
Chapter 4, "Computer Architecture", charts the milestones of computing. It begins with the analytical engine, and lauds Babbage's single-handed invention of programming without noting, however, that a human mind does not resemble the tabula rasa of a computer's memory bank. Moving quickly to the twentieth century, we get insightful descriptions of Turing machines, von Neumann machines (which turn out to be the kind of computer we are accustomed to), the mind-bending tree-structured LISP machines, and Newell's pragmatic production machines.
Chapter 5, "Real Machines", might be better titled "Real Problems". Haugeland presents some of the brick walls that AI research has run into. These can be grouped into the phenomenon of the combinatorial explosion: in order to interact with the real world in a manner that demonstrates "common sense", an AI must have access to an impossibly large store of information (while accessing what it needs in due time), and be able to consider an equally impossibly large set of potential courses of action. (p. 178) Methods to restrict what the AI has to consider, such as the focus on "micro-worlds", result in a system with no sense. Haugeland acknowledges these problems, and offers nothing but hope in scientific and technological progress to answer them.
Chapter 6, "Real People", develops means by which the sense that humans exhibit, and machines are far from realizing. Dennett's intentional stances and Grice's conversational implicatures are intelligent-if partial-characterizations of perspicuous reasoning. They are, however, frustratingly slippery for computer programmers, so it's not surprising that Haugeland, with some exasperation, groups them together under the "nonasininity canon": "An enduring system makes sense to the extent that, as understood, it isn't making [a rear] of itself." (p. 219) I feel that, if a reader has followed the author this far, then he or she deserves better than this.
Yet Haugeland and his colleagues are bound to feel frustration. Computers are electromechanical in nature, while humans are neurochemical. Computers can engage in numerical calculation with speed and precision, while most people find mathematics to be their most difficult school subject. Computers are tools that we devised to assist us. Human behavior was forged in the four-billion cauldron of evolution, and psychologists have barely begun to sort out the seething stew of vestigial loves, hates, and motivations that shape our behavior. And honest cognitive science will admit that humans and supercomputers are each masters of two separate, very different worlds. At the end, Haugeland finally admits this possibility-without contemplating the alternatives to the computation theory of might that this possibility demands.

This is a great exposition of the fundamental notions involved in the philosophy of AI. While at first look may appear like a good undergraduate read, it is, in fact, quite subtle and deep in most of the material it touches. Great scholarship.

Accessible introduction to good old-fashioned artificial intelligence...

John Haugeland's book begins with an hypothesis: human thought is at bottom "rational symbol manipulation." This is a contentious thesis but Haugeland does not present it dogmatically. Haugeland's book presents a narrative history of AI and the attempts that have been made to build realistic computers that are capable of mimicking human thought by manipulating symbols. The book is broken up into topics but Haugeland also manages to present a lot of the history and context which is good for neophytes like me.

John Haugeland's book has a number of virtues that make it a good introduction to classical AI. First, its accessibility. I have a strong background in philosophy, but I have almost no background in philosophy of mind, computer science, or cognitive science. Even without that background I found the ideas presented in this book to be both lucid and powerful. The chapter that examines computer architecture was the most challenging but Haugeland still manages to present the ideas clearly.

Second, Haugeland is honest about the serious difficulties that classical AI runs into when trying to produce realistic models of human thought. However, as I realized very quickly reading this book, even the failures of classical AI are illuminating. We learn a great deal about human thought by examining the ways in which computers fail to realistically mimic our thought. By seeing what computers are (at the present moment) incapable of doing we get some insight into what we are capable of doing. I think human thought progresses by following paths to their natural conclusion and, even when we reach dead ends, we have learned something about why that path was a dead end. So, I think it is great that there are people taking the basic hypthothesis that human thought is rational symbol manipulation as far as it will go. Even if the version of AI presented in this book turns out to be a dead end we will know more about why it is a dead end if we pursue it to the end. If we simply dismiss it on a priori grounds we gain nothing.

Third, Haugeland himself is not dogmatic one way or the other, which is extremely refreshing. He clearly finds the prospect of AI exciting but he does not consider it inevitable. He sees the problems and challenges clearly and he does not hide them from the reader or adopt a defensive posture. It is easy to dismiss the idea of AI, but the easy dismissal of AI is generally based on our intuitive understanding of how our thought functions, and our intuitions are often wrong. One of the great things about AI research is that it often presents us with really startling, counter-intuitive hypotheses about how our minds function. And finally, Haugeland never pretends we know more than we do and he leaves the reader with lots of unsolved problems begging for thought and future research (which is a good thing).

All in all, if you are looking for a good, accessible, exciting introduction to classical AI, Haugeland's book is a great place to start.

No wonder this book is "out of print"

One of the great books written about Croatian genocide against Serbs and Vatican's involment in this holocaust. Over 250 catholic priests took part and even led Croats in bruttal extermination of Serbs from Croatia. This crime is hidden and remains hidden from public eyes since Vatican was so heavily and seriously involved. Will we ever see Avro Manhatan's book "Vatican's Holocaust" available on Amazon? I doubt it.....

Disturbing

I liked this book because of its History and now I can understand why the Reformation took place in the early 1600's. I did not know this happened during World War II and I think it is a must read for anyone searching for the truth.

Superb overview

This book, together with Vladimir Dedijer's "The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican," forms the basis of my understanding of the Serbian genocide of 1941-1945. Edmond Paris makes a superb argument about the intimate involvement of the Catholic Church, going into all the details of how, e.g. Serbs who converted to Islam were straightaway killed, so that only conversion to Catholicism was a viable possibility. The details on Ustase-Bulgarian VMRO links and on Ustase incubation in Italy and Hungary before WWII are truly enlightening.

Interestingly, unlike many other books that focus on Jasenovac, this one gives it light and cursory treatment, which is perhaps appropriate. Its focus is on the overall genocide that took place all over Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Srem. My main gripe with the text is that it ignores the Roma almost entirely. Perhaps this is because the author had focused on the religious aspect of things, in which two ethnoreligious groups (Orthodox Christians and Jews) were subjected to genocide by the political leaderships of another two (Catholics and Muslims), but he should have addressed this third victim group, the Roma, that was killed for racial reasons.
