Simply the best ... worth 10 stars!

I've owned and read a number of books on Photoshop over the past 10 years. Many of these were simple introductions to the Photoshop interface. Many were 'cook books' that provided step-by-step instructions for a few special tasks, like retouching or color balancing. Only a few really covered Photoshop in a comprehensive way or in the way a professional photographer would need. And by this, I mean approaches that covered all steps from moving images off the camera/memory card, archiving and backup, and non-destructive editing. (They are NOT introductions to photography; you are expected to now how to operate your camera!)

Martin Evening writes the best books on Photoshop and Lightroom. They cover all aspects of the software. He is a professional photographer with many awards to his credit. His books are comprehensive in all ways that a photographer needs. And because of this they are in fact 'substantial' books; big, thick, heavy books. However, the writing is superb. When he give detailed step-by-step instruction, they are clear and well illustrated. Sometimes this goes well beyond my needs as a nature photographer. Martin does a lot of fashion work, so extracting hair details from an image so it can be pasted onto a different background gets detailed coverage. Such chapters are easy to skip, though, but if there's any chance you might need it, it's there. So I'm simply saying that you won't outgrow one of Martin's books.

They are typically a bit pricier than some, too. However, they are in full color throughout, printed on high quality coated papers, and screen shots big enough to actually see what the author is talking about. (Some Photoshop books have color images only in a central set of coated pages, some in fact only black and white! Books by some really good authors have incredibly small screen shots where illustration just don't work. Often screen shots covering topics like sharpening or noise removal just do not work.)

Martin has an earlier 'big book' on Lightroom. This particular books covers the Develop module almost exclusively. Through a series of editing sessions he covers all of the tools in this module in detail. And because the book is relatively new, it has all the latest features as well. And I will emphasize that as Adobe pumps out updates, Martin adds free material covering these new features to the book's web site. (He has done this for all his books, by the way.) Right now there are 8 videos that accompany this book.

I also note that Martin's Lightroom books now take an approach that acknowledges that Lightroom is part of the Adobe CC Photographer licensing option that includes Lightroom, Bridge, Camera Raw and Photoshop. This book clearly shows how some tasks are best approached by moving some images into Photoshop for editing, then saving back to Lightroom.

And it also means that all of the tools in the Lightroom Develop module covered by this book are fully applicable to Adobe Camera Raw. Yes the user interface is somewhat different between LR and ACR, yet the underlying pixel engine is the same. But the combination of ACR and smart objects in Photoshop is the cornerstone of a non-destructive work flow. So if you participate in the Adobe Photography license apps, and especially if you primarily use Lightroom, this book is another excellent addition to Martin Evening's book series. And also highly recommended even if you primarily use the Bridge/ACR/Photoshop workflow!

Adventures in Lightroom

Lightroom instruction books aimed at beginners usually explain how the sliders change an image, but seldom try to explain how moving the sliders can make art, or at least artful works. Perhaps that's appropriate since learning what the sliders do is a task in itself, without having to think of art.

In this book, Martin Evening goes to the next step, which is to take a number of images, and show you how he has used the various Lightroom controls on them to make them more artful. Along the way, he offers additional advice on how to shoot particular types of images. The chapters are organized functionally, rather just following the order presented in Lightroom, and the emphasis is on the use of the develop module. There are chapters on, among others, adjusting tone and color, recomposing existing images, and black and white conversions. There are what might be called tutorials, where the author shows you an image he started with, explains the changes he made in Lightroom, and occasionally Photoshop, with screen captures of various menus and the modified images, and the ultimate final version.

Evening assumes some familiarity with Lightroom and Photoshop and often doesn't provide a lot of detail on the tool or menu he is using so if one is not familiar with the software, one can easily become lost. In fact, if you want to learn Lightroom and Photoshop, this is not the book for you.

The information is pitched on a variety of levels. On the one hand, the instruction on the spot removal tool is rather basic. On the other hand, his solution for removing street hardware by combining two images shot a few feet apart was something I had never encountered before, although it made absolute sense.

Although there are no online images to download and manipulate along with the author, there are videos that repeat and reinforce some of the tutorials in the text.

Occasionally some explanations of technical topics required a second or third reading to understand, but this was more because of complexity. Generally, Evening's writing is clear and accessible.

To create an artful image, one must examine the original capture and decide how one wants it to look in its final form. If the photographer does that, then it may be a matter of simply applying the correct tools to reach that goal. It's not always apparent what those tools are, but I suspect Evening can help the photographer see more of those tools. He doesn't teach one how to analyze the basic image as such, but one can infer his process of analysis from what he does, and that can be quite valuable.

Once a user develops a good familiarity with Lightroom and Photoshop, it hard to say how to develop more advanced skills. Evening presents many good ideas and tools that will probably help someone who understands the basics of Lightroom and Photoshop gain those skills.

The book has mathematical mistakes and incorrect formulas.
Just went thru the first 7 chapters and found incorrect formulas for exponential smoothing, including several tables.
While the text content is OK, do not rely on the accuracy of the examples, especially if you are not familiar with the topic or concept.

Pretty good book on Logistics

The book does a pretty good job of going through supply chain and logistics. There are a lot of spelling and grammar errors and even some math errors in some of the charts, but it still gets its point across. Pretty expensive though.

Mr. Lister is currently Deputy Director of the Fighter Avionics Squadron at the Warner Robins Air Logistic Complex. He manages the repair of F-15, F-16, F-22, and F-35 avionic systems, electronic warfare systems, and countermeasures. His repair portfolio includes navigational controls and indicators, electronic jammers, flare/flack dispensers, computers, displays, processors, controllers, radar, and radar warning components.

 

Mr. Lister earned a Master of Business Administration degree with an Accounting concentration and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with an Accounting concentration from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, and a Master of Science in Quality Assurance degree from Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta.

A Great Single Source Project Management Resource from PMBOK to AIRMIS!

Mr. Lister’s book is a “masterpiece” that outlines models for project management. In his treatise, he takes us on a journey from the roots of project management to the more sophisticated techniques of project management being used today. This book is a single source reference and guide to aid any organizations and/or businesses in project management. He has captured the essence of the Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) and his book can be used to support CAPM and PMP certification. He has explored the PMBOK 10 knowledge areas of project integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, procurement, and stakeholders’ management. He has dealt meticulously with the topics of Operations Management, Project Management, Organizational Management, Program Management, and Portfolio Management. His work with the Aircraft Repair Management Information System (ARMIS) formed the foundation for current aircraft project planning and scheduling systems used in depot aircraft maintenance repair. This volume is a much needed addition to any project manager’s library. I highly recommend it as comprehensive one volume resource tool for project management!

From Momofuku: Ginger Scallion Noodles and Ginger Scallion Sauce

Our ginger scallion noodles are an homage to/out-and-out rip-off of one of the greatest dishes in New York City: the $4.95 plate of ginger scallion noodles at Great New York Noodletown down on the Bowery in Chinatown.

Ginger scallion sauce is one of the greatest sauces or condiments ever. Ever. It’s definitely a mother sauce at Momofuku, something that we use over and over and over again. If you have ginger scallion sauce in the fridge, you will never go hungry: stir 6 tablespoons into a bowl of hot noodles--lo mein, rice noodles, Shanghai thick noodles--and you’re in business. Or serve over a bowl of rice topped with a fried egg. Or with grilled meat or any kind of seafood. Or almost anything.

At Noodle Bar, we add a few vegetables to the Noodletown dish to appease the vegetarians, add a little sherry vinegar to the sauce to cut the fat, and leave off the squirt of hoisin sauce that Noodletown finishes the noodles with. (Not because it’s a bad idea or anything, just that we’ve got hoisin in our pork buns, and too much hoisin in a meal can be too much of a good thing. Feel free to add it back.)

The dish goes something like this: boil 6 ounces of ramen noodles, drain, toss with 6 tablespoons Ginger Scallion Sauce (below); top the bowl with 1/4 cup each of Bamboo Shoots (page 54 of Momofuku); Quick-Pickled Cucumbers (page 65 of Momofuku); pan-roasted cauliflower (a little oil in a hot wide pan, 8 or so minutes over high heat, stirring occasionally, until the florets are dotted with brown and tender all the way through; season with salt); a pile of sliced scallions; and a sheet of toasted nori. But that’s because we’ve always got all that stuff on hand. Improvise to your needs, but know that you need ginger scallion sauce on your noodles, in your fridge, and in your life. Ingredients

• 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced scallions (greens and whites; from 1 to 2 large bunches)
• 1/2 cup finely minced peeled fresh ginger
• 1/4 cup grapeseed or other neutral oil
• 1 1/2 teaspoons usukuchi (light soy sauce)
• 3/4 teaspoon sherry vinegar
• 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, or more to taste

(Makes about three cups)

Directions

Mix together the scallions, ginger, oil, soy, vinegar, and salt in a bowl. Taste and check for salt, adding more if needed. Though it’s best after 15 or 20 minutes of sitting, ginger scallion sauce is good from the minute it’s stirred together up to a day or two in the fridge. Use as directed, or apply as needed.

A Colombian cooking from Momofuku

I bought Momofuku a few weeks ago, after I heard an interview with the author on NPR. Coincidentally, my eleven year old daughter and I are going through a Ramen Noodles craze, inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's films (the grandfather in Whisper of the Heart serves noodles to the young ones when in distress; and in Ponyo the mom makes noodles look like magic).

In any case, I wanted something better than the packages available at the local Asian grocery store. Now, a month later, not only are my ramen noodles exquisite, but Momofuku has made me a much better cook. Here's why:
* Chang's attention to the quality of the ingredients one uses: I found a local farmer who raises pigs and drove an hour and a half on beautiful Oklahoma country roads to her place. My freezer is now packed with wonderful cuts of free ranging, non-chemical raised pork, stew meat, and bacon.
* His large quantities did not deter me. Actually, the book's advise on how to store food is perfect for my family of two. I made a huge pot of ramen noodle broth, let it reduce and once ready (simmered for 6 hours), stored in small containers in the freezer. Now I have absolutely wonderful broth for months. (Note: as a Colombian from the Andes, I don't want my broth to have any fishy flavor, so I excluded the Kombu from Chang's recipe)
* Chang's recipe for roasting pork is amazing too! I followed it by the book and ended up with something so good I had a hard time believing I had made it. I roasted a huge chunk of shoulder, and once ready and cool, shredded it, divided it in small zip lock bags, and to the freezer. As with the broth, I have excellent roasted pork to add to our weekly ramen noodles.
* Chang's creative techniques: I will never fry chicken any other way. Momofuku's recipe for fried chicken is exquisite. Easy, creative, and the chicken is delicious, tender, not oily, brown on the outside ...perfect.
* Small details that take once's eating experience to an entirely new level: such as the ginger, scallion recipe. Again, as a Colombian, when nostalgic sometimes I add a little chopped cilantro to the ginger-scallion sauce.

MO Momofuku please

Genius. I NEVER would've thought cherry tomatoes and sesame oil went so well together!
Many of the recipes are time consuming. But it's care, quality and skill that makes good restaurants stand out. Momofuku's recipes certainly rule out the ordinary.
I am Chinese-American and make my soups by simmering bones for 6 hrs, that is what is takes - so David Chang's ramen broth is the real deal. This is the first I heard about adding tare, that must be the killer deal. No MSG here.

Some of the reviews scared me off at first but not all the recipes are difficult. I made the braised pork belly. Dude. This is an EASY recipe. Marinate w/salt & sugar overnight and stick it in the oven. Made the steam bun thing and all. Yummy, worthwhile and actually easy. Oh, and it's like one of their flagship dishes.

He is Korean-American and he actually made Kimchi better. I tried the nappa and cucumber kimchi and it rocks. So much better than the standard kimchi, it's got lots ginger, sugar and fish sauce too.
I don't think I'll ever play around with food glue or make deep fry pork rinds at home but this cookbook is not titled, 'home cookin momofuku'. It does, however, makes you appreciate what it takes to prepare their food.

This is a cookbook that requires some asian ingredients and cooking methods. So if you've never even purchased a chinese or korean cookbook or never made anything but a stir-fry, the recipes may seem daunting. If you don't make any of recipes, it teaches a few things and it's also a good read.

David Chang is a young, energetic and creative chef who takes you down the path of his success. He is very entertaining so it also fun to read (minus his expletives). You can feel his passion, hard work and he repeatedly credits those who have supported and helped him to where he is. How many chefs do that in their cookbooks?
I am hoping to visit his restaurant when I'm in NYC next spring. Just don't know which one yet.

For Chefs ... and Armchair Chefs

I came to MOMOFUKU as a relatively beginning cook (despite my middle age) and an intermediate foodie, and suspected that the recipes from David Chang's acclaimed group of NYC restaurants would be over my head. I was right -- as they will be for all but the most adventurous and experienced cooks. But recipes aren't the only aspect to this book -- it's also a memoir of Chang's path from happy noodle-eater/unhappy office-worker through cooking school and apprenticeships to award-winning chef and restaurateur.

In fact, straightforward recipes are fairly rare in this book. Rather, they're tutorials -- each step is a paragraph about process and technique, and I'm already a better cook (and restaurant patron) just for having read them. The book itself is trademark Clarkson-Potter (think Barefoot Contessa and Martha Stewart books) -- smooth, heavy pages filled with full-color photographs of food, the restaurants, diners and staff -- many of which evoke a sense of motion and hectic energy. That energy is reinforced by Chang's conversational text, including profanity (which feels seamless and characterizing) and absolute gems of instruction. For example, for a pan-roasted rib eye (a do-able recipe), Chang advises to "Season the steak liberally with salt -- like you'd salt a sidewalk in New York in the winter," and, after cooking, to "Let the steak rest. Just leave it the hell alone"; about removing the fat from pigskin in the process of making pork rinds (*not* a do-able recipe): "Scrape gently but with determination."

Highly recommended for uber-motivated -- and armchair -- cooks.

I think that this book will fill a tremendous void in the textbook market for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in industrial organization and applied microeconomics. The strength of Tirole's work is his masterful synthesis of analytical development and intuitive discussion. Consequently, he makes understandable to the reader some very advanced research. This synthesis will prove invaluable to graduate students who are looking for a research niche of their own.

Very good book, but not for everyone

This book is absolutely the "classic" in IO. The author amazingly provided very clear and coherent exposition to this huge, but diverse field. But, this book is not for everyone as some reviews below implied. First, consultants or managers may not find this book useful for the real-life application, because this is a (rather serious) "theory" book. It has no detailed cases, no practical managerial implications, and so on. For that purpose, there are many other good books like Schere, or Carlton & Perloff, etc. The virtue of this book lies in the author's capability to make accessible otherwise very complicated and abstruse models, which would be mainly the concern of grad students in econ, not consultants. Therefore, econ students who are interested in theory development in IO would quickly grasp the essence of important IO models with a simple algebra. I don't understand what part of the book some people think is useful as a reference for the consultants or even everyone.
Second, simple algebra in the book does not mean it is accessible to "everyone." At the introductory grad level, game thoery and information economics use only basic algebra, but it is still not easy at all. Of course, this book introduces almost all important topics usually taught in the first-year micro sequence at graduate school, like repeated game (Ch 6), basic mechanism design technique (non-linear pricing in Ch 3), principal-agent problem (Ch 1), and so on. It would be misleading if one says these topics are accessible to everyone because of "minimal use of math." Even chapter 1, the theory of firm, is a very deep discussion, introducing the concept of "incomplete contract."
In my opinion, this book will be ideal for econ grad students, who would want to quickly review relevant chapters before moving into more recent IO literature (of course, now with full rigor).

The best IO book around

I studied Economics, soon after found myself working as a consultant, and still I keep this book on the shelf as reference in case I need it. IO is the most important branch of Economics with direct applications on the business world. This book is entirely theoretict and contains only the most significant models, along with references to other papers related the subject. The only addition I would make to this book is to incorporate some practical information to see the power of the models explaining the real world.
Before starting to shout that a "New Economy has come!", people should focus more on the intrincate models already developed by economists ranging so different subjects as: differentiation, entry, information, innovation, etc. When I wrote my thesis on e-commerce, ...
A word of advice: You need very good grounding in Game Theory (beyond the initial stuff you learn at intermediate Microeconomic level), if not, try reading the appendix on Game Theory before inmersing on the subject.

Classic IO Graduate Textbook

Tirole's book remains a classic IO reference for graduate-level IO courses even though it was published in 1988. The strength of the book is in its style of exposition - crisp mathematical models written in a style that is commonly found in journal articles. Therefore, reading the book prepares oneself for reading theoretical IO journal or working papers. This also implies that appreciation of the book requires that the reader is comfortable with mathematics and has some patience in working out the models (intermediate steps are sometimes omitted). However, those who persevere will reap the benefits.

Excellent book!

If you have not read the book, 40 Days through Revelation" by Ron Rhodes then you are missing out on a great read. It is a workbook/book that reads like a book and is hard to put down. It is only 40 days and the chapters are only about 4 to 5 pages long and in a reasonable size font. Not a tiny or real small font at all. It takes Revelation and teaches it in bite size chunks that are easy to understand. I highly recommend this book and it is not expensive. I paid only $8.50 for it on Amazon. Seriously, if you're interested in understanding this book of the bible then please consider this book. I am not helping the author at all and I don't know him but, I know a great teaching tool when I see it and this one is awesome.

great book for understanding Revelation better

Revelation isn't my favorite book of the Bible to read, and I don't read it often, to be honest. When I got the opportunity to review this book, I decided it might be my chance to grasp this book of the Bible better.

The author really seems to know his "stuff". There are 40 chapters, one for each day. In each chapter, he deals with a different section of Revelation, discussing and explaining it, ending with some cross reference Scripture to read, life lessons, and questions for discussion and reflection.

I found the book to be interesting, informative, and easy to read. The author has written it in a way that isn't boring to read, and he does a great job of explaining from a Biblical viewpoint, what this book is saying and what he believes it to mean. No one knows for sure how to interpret some of the passages in Revelation, but he does a great job of explaining them from what he believes.

I did enjoy the book, even more than I thought I would, and understand some of Revelation more than I did before reading the book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand this mysterious book of the Bible.
