About the Author
MICHAEL J. ZWECHER is a leading expert on retirement income. He has created guidance, designed products, tools, and portfolio constructions that appeal to the financial advisor community and their clients. Zwecher co-chairs the curriculum committee of the Retirement Income Industry Association. He spent over ten years at Merrill Lynch, holding senior roles in risk management and wealth management, where he ran the Investment Management Strategic Solutions team in the Financial Products Group. Prior to Merrill, he was a consultant with Deloitte, an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Fordham University, and a visiting associate professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Book on RIIA's Essential Readings List

It is worth noting that this workbook and its companion book are on the Essential Readings list for the RMA designation [Retirement Management Analyst(sm)].

Mike Zwecher's books focus on one of three fundamental retirement planning/flooring strategies identified in the RMA curriculum:

A Poor Choice

It was a major struggle to get through this text. The author's total concept of "flooring" as a way to build retirement portfolio was, in my opinion, contrived. The two paragraph summary sections at the end of each chapter seemed to say everything that needed to be said - it was just better said and better illustrated by other authors on the subject. This book isn't a worthwhile read for the practicing RIA and certainly not useful for the non-professional.

Yet by 1959—now calling herself Nina Simone—she had sung New York City’s venerable Town Hall and was on her way.

Cohodas follows her biography of Dinah Washington (Queen) with that of another prominent African-American jazz singer—although Nina Simone would bristle at that label, insisting from the very start of her career that her music was grounded in the classical. (Eunice Waymon only began performing in nightclubs as Nina Simone after a failed application to the Curtis Institute of Music.) If Cohodas is respectful of Simone's legacy, particularly the impact of songs like Mississippi Goddam and Young, Gifted and Black on the civil rights movement, she's also forthright about Simone's contentious relationship with audiences and critics, and the possible mental illness underpinning that turmoil. It seems as if every one of Simone's onstage outbursts is recounted, along with every review describing her as a very angry young woman or wishing she'd stop playing protest songs. One of the few areas in which Cohodas shows full deference to her subject is in brushing off rumors of lesbian relationships, although a passing comment that Simone was inexorably drawn to the playwright Lorraine Hansberry raises questions. A Worthwile Biography, But Not The Best

Nadine Cohodas' biography of Nina Simone is well researched, yet I find that the author paints an untrue picture of events that supposedly took place during some of Nina Simone's concert performances. Much is made of her erratic behaviour on stage, in one instance in a Billie Holiday Tribute that Simone took part in at the Hollywood Bowl. I have an audio tape of her complete performance. It was one of Nina's very greatest performances, yet the reader is led to belive that her appearance was a disaster. Cohoda's brief review of Simone's 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival appearance (which exists on DVD) makes one wonder if the author actually watched the entire performance. Too little attention is made of what made Nina Simone such an important and original artist. Her prolific recording activity and filmed performances should have been given more attention. I found another biography, "Nina Simone: Break Down and Let It All Out" by Sylvia Hampton, David Nathan, and Lisa Simone Kelly to be a more intersting read. This book does contain some fascinating photographs, though.

A TRUE ARTIST UNDER APPRECIATED

Nina Simone has often been an enigmatic figure. A tremendously talented singer/musician and a recognized figure in the Civil Rights Movement, she often showed a troubling personality. Nadine Cohodas has done a wonderful job giving us a biography of this prominent lady. Born Eunice Waymon in North Carolina, when she was very young she started showing great musical talent. Usually she is classified as a jazz singer but Simone hated classifications. Her failure to be selected in to a prestigious musical school for being black set a feeling that would follower in her live. Now singing as Nina Simone in New York she became a huge performer and would enter into the world of the black intelligentsia. Soon her passion was the Civil rights Movement. But this book shouts out at the problems she had in life. Often she was perceived as having bad behavior with her audiences, and even friends. Turns out she was suffering from bipolar disorders and these were hidden from almost everyone until after her death. Cohodas does a good job writing about her life and giving us background on her mental issues.

The High Priestess of Soul

I became a fan of Nina Simone as a teenager in the 60s after seeing her in concert on TV, much to the puzzlement of my friends who considered her 'uncool'. However, I've remained a fan although I never saw her live - I did have the chance to see her at the Bishopstock Festival in Devon UK in 2001 but by that time her voice had gone and I chose not to attend that night and to remember her through her records. There are several biographies of Nina, including an autobiography, which all seem to have their supporters and also their critics, this is the latest and so can draw on these previous memoirs together with fresh interviews to give a comprehensive overview of this unique artist. She wasn't really a jazz singer, a blues singer, a folk singer, a soul singer, a protest singer, a pop singer, a cabaret singer, a show singer or a classical pianist - although her work contained elements of all these genres, combined into Nina's own unclassifiable style.

When first skimming through the book I was a bit surprised that her performing career only began from pages 60-odd onwards but these early pages dealing with the lives of her parents and family and her own young life give an excellent context to her later life and also to the place of black people in America at that time. Nina emerges as a determined and very focussed child, who was opinionated and knew her place in the world from an early age (a foretaste of the diva she was to become in later years). Even in her earliest performances she didn't put up with what she considered disrespect but there are also instances of unreasonable behaviour even in her 20s which must have been early indications of the bipolar disorder that she was diagnosed with in later life.

The book charts her career progressing from small club dates to international concert appearances, a constantly changing procession of backing musicians, her recording sessions and her fight to get royalties from these records. It also notes Nina's gradual involvement with the civil rights movement and her increasing militancy and sympathy with black power. In line with all these the book also catalogues increasing bad behaviour both on stage and off and although some have criticised other books for focussing on this behaviour unfortunately it was unquestionably a feature of many Nina Simone performances in her later years. However, the book also details how many musicians, promoters and friends remained loyal despite the bad treatment they sometimes received from her and also how audiences still greeted her ecstatically despite late appearances, erratic on stage behaviour and failing vocal and musical powers.

I found Nadine Cohodas' book a good, very objective study of the life of a truly unique artist. I've previously read Nadine's 'Spinning Blues Into Gold' - the story of Chess Records - which I also found very interesting but like this book strangely 'cold' - it was so objective that you couldn't tell if she was fan of Miss Simone or hated her. There are some excellent photographs of Nina throughout the book but these are printed on the same pages as the text rather than separate glossy pages, which no doubt keeps costs down but does reduce the quality of the images. The book ends with a comprehensive index, a bibliography, a (very) short list of CD/DVD credits, acknowledgements and 40 pages of notes. The notes contain several very interesting snippets together with the page numbers that they relate to but at the back of the book they are completely isolated from the text - I felt it would have been better to include the notes at the foot of the relevant pages or to annotate the text with reference numbers to link with the notes.

You can embrace your mission at any age!

I enjoy reading stories about the Saints. With so many Saint books to choose from, I always look for one that is unique. I look for authors who present the life of the Saint in a different way or one who writes in a way that affects me personally. Julie Onderko has accomplished both. The title alone captured my attention: Discover Your Next Mission From God. Julie has chosen some very exceptional Saints, some who the reader may have already heard about, but there are also others that might be unknown to the reader. The title of each chapter invites the reader to recognize the personal mission that connects each of us with the holies who have gone before us. At the end of each chapter is a reflection on how we can relate to what we just read. The last chapter is one of my favorites. The reflection ends “Lord what do you want me to do?” And we follow our Blessed Mother’s instructions: “Do whatever He tells you.” I highly recommend this book.

I highly recommend this book! It is applicable to people of all ages and from all backgrounds. Her excitement shines through the pages which makes for an enjoyable read. Also, her personal testimony, along with those of the saints, gives the reader proven tools to discover one's mission or calling. Be careful, it may change your life.

Couldn't put it down...Looking forward to Volume 2

It was as if Julie was in my living room telling me all about her friends. The writing is concise and informative. I couldn't put the book down. I was impressed to find out many interesting facts about Saints, which I was aware of, as well as the other Saints which Julie introduced. It was exciting to learn about the lives of these Holy Souls. The stories gives me hope that anyone of us can become a Saint. Each chapter guides us to search for God's Will for us, and the experience of the Saints gives us that courage. Great job Julie!

In the library of physics for laypeople, Deutsch's book is unique. Correction: it is multiversal, existing in innumerable universes that Deutsch argues exist alongside the "real" universe that people perceive. Explaining that, and persuading the reader of its scientific truth, makes this work unique. Another of Deutsch's mindbenders is that each person could be resurrected near the Big Crunch (if there is one) by a universal computer with infinite memory, a conclusion discussed (and unfairly dismissed by most scientists, according to Deutsch) in Frank Tipler's The Physics of Immortality (1994). Deutsch, a quantum physicist at Oxford University, builds toward the computerized second coming on the basis of the well-known, reproducible experiment that conclusively establishes the quantum nature of light and of reality. He then discusses three more topics--computation theory, evolution, and epistemology--combining them with quantum theory to construct his Theory of Everything, the grail of all theoretical physicists. Deutsch allows that his is a minority view among his peers, but the confidence with which he presents his views, and the absence of condescension in his style, accesses nonscientists to his seemingly alien world(s). Mind-bending analysis that falls short in places

Deutsch's presentation is fascinating, mind-expanding, challenging, provocative, and--at times--riveting. It is also infuriating, perplexing, reductive, and--at times--vague. (Please note: I am not convinced that the multiverse as Deutsch describes it exists, nor am I threatened by the possibility that it might. As a result, I do not mean to quarrel with--or support--the idea itself. Instead, I am reviewing Deutsch's book from the point of view of a lay reader.)
I do recommend this book to anyone interested in reading a summary of the pursuit of a "theory of everything" and a defense of the science of parallel universes. Deutsch's theory of everything depends on four theories: quantum (as espoused by Everett), epistemology (Popper), evolution (Dawkins), and computation (Turing). Even if one does not ultimately agree with Deutsch's ideas, his book offers some interesting thought experiments (the chapter on "time travel" is especially fun) and a concise overview of several scientific trends. In addition, his book provides a decent defense of why the theory of the multiverse should be considered a reasonable explanation for the interference results obtained the infamous two-slit experiment.
That said, I do think Deutsch's book contains many shortcomings. First, although the multiverse may be a valid explanation for interference phenomenon, Deutsch fails to convince that it is THE explanation. In one short paragraph, he dismisses David Bohm's theory of wave-particle duality. "Working out what Bohm's invisible wave will do requires the same computations as working out what trillions of shadow photons will do." One could easily reverse this sentence as a criticism of Everett and Deutsch: that the trillions of unseen photons requires the same computations as working out what Bohm's single invisible wave will do. Deutsch does not explain (in this book, anyway) why trillions of photons are simpler than one wave, and he does his readers a disservice by pretending that Bohm's work does not deserve a full refutation.
Second, and similarly, Deutsch dismisses with an even shorter paragraph the charge that his "theory of everything" is anthropocentric. (He pretty much admits it is, but tries--unconvincingly, to this reader--to turn it into an argument in his favor.) Third, his discussion of evolution (one of the four "equal" strands of his theory of everything) is a mere 25 pages and, unlike the rest of the book, is at times incomprehensible and seems completely indebted to Dawkins. (Not that there is anything wrong with Dawkins's work; rather, Deutsch just seems in over his head during this part of the book.) Fourth, he rejects Kuhn's belief in the rigidity of scientific paradigms (for example, the inability of thinkers in Galileo's time to accept the full implications of the Copernican system because they were so used to thinking of the world in Ptolemaic and Judeo-Christian terms), but then he describes a modern scientific establishment that refuses to accept the multiverse implications of quantum theory because they are rooted to the concept of a single universe. (Just because modern scientific discourse is more civil does not mean that Kuhn's argument is incorrect. Deutsch's opponents are still mocking him behind his back, in book reviews, and anonymously on this Web site. Or, even more effectively, they are ignoring him altogether.) And, finally, his discussion of Tipler's omega-point theory is hurried and unfortunately nebulous: at one point, Deutsch seems to be saying that knowledge in the universe will become omniscient and omnipresent--which is practically the same as saying that the universe will become itself.
Nevertheless, regardless of what you think of its implications, Deutsch's views deserve serious consideration and, as necessary, rebuttal--not mockery and scorn. In the same way that we read Lucretius even though we know him to be wrong (or, for that matter, Einstein because we believe he is mostly right), we should read Deutsch's work because he challenges the way we look at our world.

Best science book of the decade

There are a lot of books that try to explain science to the layman and forward some new and grandiose worldview at the same time. Most of them do okay at the former, but fail miserably at the latter. This book does both, perhaps better than any book I've ever read (and I read a lot of science books). Deutsch identifies and explains the most important and interesting aspects of both quantum theory (his main topic) and the intimate relationships between it and the sciences of epistemology, computability, and evolution. The explanations are intuitive and easy to follow if you have any technical background at all, and sometimes even if you don't. Better yet, he convincingly synthesizes them into a truly compelling argument for a new (well, okay, not new but not yet widely accepted) view of reality on the deepest and widest possible scale. He steps onto a bit more shaky ground when he tries to bring in a "kitchen sink" of disciplines, some of which he doesn't seem to know nearly as much about as his native discipline (physics). Still, even the less convincing extensions to his basic idea are well considered and thought-provoking. And the basic idea itself--that zillions of not-quite-identical copies of our universe exist and are just as real and tangible as our own--is more than enough to make this book a phenomenal "mind-expanding" experience

The book was published in 1997, and a lot has happened since then. Yet the foundations retain their permanence, and David Deutsch's captivating writing is as fresh as ever. Despite the availability of newer books, for the layman/woman, now almost 10 years later, I would still rank this book at the top. There is a lot in the book; and yet, the ideas are presented in a clear and engaging way. The author is a pioneer, a giant in modern physics; he was and is a driving force in new discoveries in the subject. Yet he has his personal way of explaining physical reality. His view is not shared by all scientists, one should admit. However, there is agreement about the scientific conclusions. The first chapter in the book stresses *explanation*, our understanding of the reason for things. There are other views of science, e.g., instrumentalism: predicting the outcome of experiments.

The author's view on quantum theory is based his idea about parallel universes. While fascination, the reader should be aware that there are alternative theories for explaining quantum phenomena. An important concept in quantum theory and quantum computation is "decoherence", and it is explained (ch 9) in terms of different (parallel) universes. In ch 9 about quantum computers, it might have been only fair to mention that there are such other current views on decoherence; but this is a minor complaint.

Presentation: I love that each chapter concludes with a section on terminology and a summary.

As a subject theoretical computer science started with Alan Turing and John von Neumann in the 1940ties: Classical computation follows the model of Turing,-- strings of bits, i.e., 0s and 1s; and a mathematical model which is now called the Turing machine.

Instead of bits, why not two-level quantum systems, e.g., models built from electrons or photons? Such an analogues model for computation based on two-level quantum systems, and a quantum version of Turing's machine was suggested in the 1980ties by R.P. Feynman. The form it now has owes much to the author himself, David Deutsch. But it wasn't until Peter Shor's qubit-factoring algorithm in the late 1990ties (not covered in the book) that the subject really took off, and really caught the attention of the mainstream science community, and of the general public: The 'unbreakable' codes might be breakable after all !

That there is a polynomial factoring algorithm, as Shor showed, shook up the encryption community, for obvious reasons, and created headlines in the news. Ideas in the quantum realm, and not part of classical thinking, include superposition of (quantum) states, the EPR paradox (1935), and (quantum) coherence. Although these concepts are at the foundation of quantum theory, they make a drastic change in our whole theoretical framework of computation: Now one passes from the familiar classical notion of bit-registers to that of qubit-registers, and the laws of quantum mechanics take over. Mathematical physicists and computer scientists must revisit the old masters: Bohr, Einstein, Heisenberg, Pauli, and Dirac. In passing from logic gates to quantum gates (unitary matrices), the concept of switching-networks from traditional computer science now changes drastically. The changes introduce brand new scientific challenges, and new truly exciting opportunities. I believe that this book does justice to this, and that it is still a fascinating and thought provoking invitation to some of the most intriguing trends in modern physics.

Matthew Helmke is an active member of the Ubuntu community. He served from 2006 to 2011 on the Ubuntu Forum Council, providing leadership and oversight of the Ubuntu Forums (www.ubuntuforums.org), and spent two years on the Ubuntu regional membership approval board for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He has written about Ubuntu for several magazines and websites, is a lead author of The Official Ubuntu Book, and coauthored The VMware Cookbook. He works as a senior technical writer for Pearson North America’s Assessment and Information division, documenting assessment software. Matthew first used Unix in 1987 while studying LISP on a Vax at the university. He has run a business using only free and open source software, has consulted, and has a master’s degree in Information Resources and Library Science from the University of Arizona. Excellent coverage of Ubuntu. Easy enough to understand. Material applies to all of Ubuntu's flavors. Extra web material and DVD are definite pluses. I'm enjoying this big book and learning a lot too!

While I realize that neither the book nor the Ubuntu OS are intended for the hardcore Linux admi, the book falls short of providing the sort of info that users who advance beyond the newbie stage might need. For instance, even a novice Linux users is likely to need or want to add an external or flash drive, and the book doesn't even mention how to format an additional disk. And what is there could be much better indexed.
