Great book about how God wants us to not fear. Everyone feels fear, but we have to decide either to accept the fear or reject it. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Grade 5-8-Thirteen-year-old Koly's arranged marriage seems a blessing for her impoverished family. Her mother embroiders a wedding sari, while the girl stitches her family memories into a quilt. But when she arrives at the home where, according to custom, she will live for the rest of her life under the supervision of her mother-in-law, she discovers that her 16-year-old husband Hari is gravely ill with tuberculosis. She learns that her dowry was needed to finance a journey to Benares, with the hope that the holy water of the Ganges River will cure him. Hari dies there and she is trapped, a widow with no future. Luckily, her father-in-law recognizes her desire to learn and teaches her to read. A few years later, when he, too, dies, her mother-in-law abandons her in another holy city, Vrindavan. Raji, a young rickshaw driver, helps Koly find a place to live and keeps track of her progress. Eventually, she finds work embroidering saris. Raji has a plan, and a dream. He wants to make enough money to buy seed and tools and return to his village, with Koly as his wife. In a happy ending that suggests that established custom can be challenged in positive ways, she agrees. Whelan has enhanced a simple but satisfying story with loving detail about traditional Indian life, the harsh reality of feudal customs that persist today, and the complexity of cultural change. Readers with a curiosity about other worlds and other ways will find Koly's story fascinating.

My fourth grader and I loved reading it

This was a chapter book at school. My fourth grader and I loved reading it.. we used to read one chapter every night before bed and we were so thrilled to come back and read every day. The one thing we didn't like in the story was how Koly never got to see her parents till the end, not even when she became a widow. I felt that that was one loose end that the author didn't do a good job of tying. This was also majorly my son's opinion and also his disappointment concerning the story. But overall, very interesting read and a page turner !!

Judging a book by its cover

I know you should never judge a book by its cover, but this time I did. I thought that this book would not be that great. In fact I thought it would be the normal clichéd stupid female-plagued romance book that you can find in the corner of any dollar store.

I WAS WRONG!!! This book was not even remotely close to that. I had to read this for a college class that I am in and it was worth it. I am thinking about buying myself another 3 copies so I can give them out as gifts. This book is a look into the culture of India and the plight faced by young brides and widows. The way it is written you will believe that this book could have been at any given time in India, but the more you read on the more you come to realize that this book is a lot more recent then you would want to believe.

An excellent must read for any age group....well maybe not for kids, but that would be because they would not understand a lot of the content or its significance....so if you are 16 and older go for it! Have fun.

Excellent fictional look into the life of a young widow in India. I found this hard to put down. The story is very sweet while at the same time it touches on real-life hardships and the resilience of the characters. We are reading this as a part of our homeschool curriculum as we learn about the Eastern hemisphere. It's a great addition. This could easily been read by most middle schoolers and understood if read aloud by 4th grade and up (maybe even younger).

About the Author
Clint Archer is a graduate of the Master's Seminary, and holds degrees in divinity, theology as well as the Doctorate in expository preaching. In 2005 he became the preaching pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church in South Africa, where he currently ministers. Clint is an enthusiastic blogger, and has a passion for short-term missions. He has taught the doctrine of eternal rewards at churches, seminaries, and conferences in eight countries. He and his wife, Kim, have three children and a dog named Spurgeon.

Captivating read - great Biblical challange to personal godliness

This is an absolute MUST read......Archer's style is as always thoroughly captivating, there is not one dull paragraph in this book! The Biblical challenge from this book to personal godliness in the light of the bema seat is probably the biggest single challenge I have ever faced in my Christian walk. It has impacted on every decision as I now consider all my thoughts and actions in the light of Christ's scrutiny and eternal rewards as I have never done before. While I was previously satisfied to rest on my full justification and lack of condemnation through the cross, I am now fully persuaded of the need for so much more as a child of God. The desire to live every public and private moment for His glory has been greatly increased since reading this book. It is of tremendous comfort to those who labour tirelessly and unnoticed and of great challenge to those who, like me, are way too concerned with earthly rewards. Be warned - it will change your life!

Must read for pastor's and laymen alike!

The Preacher's Payday is a basic examination of the eteranal rewards that will be handed out from the Bema seat at the Final judgment, and the author gives particular attention to the judgment of Bible teachers and pastors, who, as he shows from Scripture, will experience a stricter judgement but potentially greater reward. As a layman, I found this book to be encouraging and convicting. Archer has a tremendous ability with words and shows great skill with the use of word pictures. Clint also links faithfulness to the Scripture with expository preaching and spends the last few chapters giving a basic introdution to what expository preaching is and how to do it. For those who are not familiar with expository preaching you will find these chapters helpful as they deal with some of the basics. For pastors who already exposite Scripture, you will find this to be a useful refresher and may even glean some ideas from Clint. The author has done a great service by providing a select bibliography at the end of the book which takes up a little over four pages. I fully recommend this book to pastors and laymen alike, those who teach and those who don't. As Clint mentions, there is much confusion over the Bema seat, mainly because there has been little written about it. This book is an excellent primer on the subject, but it's main purpose is to encourage pastors and elders in faithfulness to Christ.
