Acres of Diamonds sparkles!

This book will not appeal to those who think that one's own surroundings offer no advantages. I agree there are some places so remote or lacking in oppritunity that to not relocate is rather a apathetic approach to life. Yet Mr. Conwell is trying to encourage the citizens of a huge city of Philadelphia that money can be made there just as easy as any other big city. I will not reveal how he suggests this can happen but I agree with Mr. Conwell's approach and logic. Helping people meet their goals will have a good effect on your ability to meet your goals. However, I feel that only works if you are dealing with good people. Ethical imbeciles don't play fair and have fun doing it. If one has the chance to meet and deal with decent people, or you encourage that side of them, then Acres of Diamonds is enchanting. I was enchanted.

Carol Smallwood received her MLS from Western Michigan University and her MA in History from Eastern Michigan University. She wrote, co-wrote, edited, co-edited 18 books for Scarecrow, McFarland, Libraries Unlimited, Pudding House, and others. Her magazine credits include: The Writer s Chronicle, Instructor, English Journal, Michigan Feminist Studies. She has worked in school, public, and special libraries, as well as serving as a consultant. She was awarded a prize from the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and her short story Death in the Family was recently shortlisted for the Eric Hoffer Award.

Cool book (by librarians) for Librarians with a (ouch!) $65 retail price! Thanks a lot ALA -- !

This is a wonderful book for librarians who have any interest at all in writing for publication. With contributions from about 50 librarians from every sector of librarianship, there's not a writing-related topic that I can think of that isn't discussed in at least a passing manner except indexing and it's probably in there and I just missed it.

I work with a lot of colleagues who are panic-stricken at the idea of having to do research and write for promotion and tenure. (Something I've always found perplexing since so many of us have undergraduate degrees in English and History!) I wish I could buy ten copies and pass them out to each one looking at going up for tenure in a few years. Unfortunately, however, the publisher -- the American Library Association -- is charging $65.00 for a book that should be $19.95; $29,95 at the most. (Oh, I almost forgot, if you've paid your $130.00 personal annual membership to ALA, you can get it for the bargain price of $58.50.) One would think that if any title would be subsidized by ALA to be affordable to its members, this would be it... but, nooooo. ALA keeps on squeezing!

Still, Carol Smallwood has pulled together a marvelous collection. ALA has done a good job with the physical format and layout, as the book has an attractive cover and sturdy soft binding; the content is practical, helpful, and diverse; and, specific topics are presented one-to-three pages at a time, grouped into broad topical sections. The text is very readable/skimable in a double columned format with a good-sized font.

Highly recommended for personal, professional reading and library collections of all kinds for the resident librarians to have the opportunity check-out and use!

Procrastination leads to Motivation!

I've had a copy of this book in my hands for a few weeks and I've been meaning to write a review of it but every time I pick it up I find something else that catches my eye and I end up reading instead of writing down my reactions. I've been a "published author" for nearly five of my almost 15 years as a librarian, and I've enjoyed this book devoted to librarians' experiences with a wide array of publishing opportunities. My first thought is: this could be called "Getting Published for Librarians" (along the lines of those "...for Dummies" books)! Have you ever hosted an author event at your library, and wished that it was you sitting behind that table, receiving adoration from fans, signing autographs, and raking in dough (or the best two out of three)? This book just might be your ticket! Even if you don't aspire to becoming a media darling, you're sure to find some aspect of publishing described in this book that will make you say "I could do that!" Think of this book as a cure for those I Just Can't Seem to Get Motivated Blues. Something in it is bound to inspire you. I know you're
thinking: "Yeah, Kathy, but did it inspire you to do anything?" Well, as a matter of fact, I just read Corinne H. Smith's article, "Confessions of an Amazon.com Reviewer" and it inspired me quite a bit. How? Is Bernie really this gullible?

Gosh, I wish I had liked this short story more than I did. I consider myself a rabid (yes, Virginia, that is a pun) fan of the Chet and Bernie mystery novels and jumped at the chance to read this little holiday eStory. When you go into a short story you know the author isn't going to have much time or space to fully develop characters or premise, but since I already knew the characters so well I figured I was home free. No, it didn't work out quite that way.

To begin with, this eStory doesn't fall chronologically after the latest Chet and Bernie mystery but should be wedged in between several past books. The Porsche in this one has been seen before but not recently. For those not familiar with this series, the Porsche-of-the-moment is a big deal in the story with various different cars figuring prominently in the novel. The relationship between Bernie and his girlfriend has also changed a lot since the time period of this story. Even the holiday visits with Bernie's son Charlie are completely different now than the way they are presented in this story. So this story ends up being something that happened about midway through the present novels in the series. It was a little disconcerting for me, a regular reader of the series.

I have to say I was very surprised when Bernie allowed himself to become involved in Plumpy Bonaparte's latest 'cash only' scheme of giving people Santa every day of the year. After all, Plumpy had served almost - but not quite - eight months for the Ponzi scheme Bernie helped get him convicted of without making restitution of the $1.2 million to the victims. It seemed quite a stretch for Bernie to be gullible enough to fall for this latest edition of Plumpy's tricks. Chet the Jet is still great, in fact Chet is tip-top with his daydreaming about running races with people with the prize being their pants leg in his mouth and riding shotgun with Bernie in the Porsche. If it hadn't been for Chet, this story wouldn't have appealed to me at all.

If you are already a fan and just want to read some light fare featuring some favorite characters, give this one a go. It won't take you long to read it and there is an excerpt from the Scents and Sensibility full length novel released in July 2015. If this is your first time reading a Chet and Bernie story, rest assured that the novels have the same great relationship between man and dog but filled out to a satisfactory level. And Bernie isn't quite so apt to be taken in by crooks.

Santa 365 is a small Christmas offering from Spencer Quinn. This short story takes place at some point before The Dog Who Knew Too Much but, as Quinn points out, the order in which the Chet and Bernie books are read doesn’t matter much. Bernie’s life changes a bit as the series progresses but Chet is always Chet.

As background to the story, Chet tells us that he once grabbed a fellow named Plumpy Bonaparte by the pants leg, allowing Bernie to send him to jail for running a Ponzi scheme. Now Plumpy is out and claims to have reformed, having started a business called Santa 365.

The story involves Bernie’s interaction with Santa 365. Bernie behaves in a way that is very unlike Bernie, both in his interaction with Plumpy and later by allowing (almost inviting) himself to be victimized by another criminal. Maybe Christmas has made Bernie naively trusting (if not downright foolish), but I thought Bernie’s out-of-character behavior made the story hard to swallow.

Of course, Chet is always fun, but this is a very short story, which limits the amount of amusing commentary that Chet is able to provide. There’s nothing new or fresh from Chet which, combined with a less-than-memorable plot, makes this a disappointing entry in the Chet and Bernie series.

Perhaps reading a novella for the first book in a series was not the best idea, but I was not impressed. Bernie is a private detective and the story is narrated by his dog Chet. Bernie is divorced but this is his Christmas with his son Charlie. When they arrive at Bernie's house there is a red van in the driveway. It belongs to "Plumpy" Napoleon. He is recently released from prison on parole after being put there by Bernie and Chet. He is in the business of Christmas so convinces Bernie to purchase his services for a party. The party is fun, but Santa never shows. After the party Bernie is robbed so he sets out to look for Plumpy. He finds the elf from the party and finds out that he is related to some of Plumpy's victims. They look for the money that was never found, ya da ya da. Pretty simplistic plot line.

Gr 1-4-Through zany, brightly colored illustrations and rhyming verse, Arnold explores common figures of speech that amaze and frighten a young boy. "I'll bet that broke your heart," "give him a hand," "Hold your tongue," and "jumps out of his skin" are only a few of the sayings that worry the protagonist, whose imaginings are energetically depicted in colored-pencil and watercolor washes. Goofy, cartoonlike artwork explores the deepest recesses of the child's overwrought and overworked imagination. Kids will love faces cracking, lungs being coughed up, and bodies flying apart. Vivid color and a robust artistic style will attract younger children who may not get the joke, but older children and parents will. Singsong verses in hand-lettered text strain to rhyme in some instances, with a forced, uneven gait. Although the boy's parents reassure him, the story ends where it begins. The father, who "didn't mean to be unkind," tells the child that they were afraid that he'd lost his mind. The final drawing has the boy's brain falling out of his head and onto the floor. This story is like a wild and crazy, totally manic Amelia Bedelia. Children will ask for it again and again.

Please Try and Hold Yourself Together.....

Our young narrator tells us: "Things are bad-and getting worse!/Each day it's something new./With all the stuff I hear about/I don't know what to do." Why just yesterday his toy truck wrecked and his mother consoled him by saying, "I bet that broke your heart." He didn't even know hearts could break apart. Maybe wearing a big pillow will keep it safe. And then his dad asked him to please "give him a hand." He didn't know hands came off, so he decided he'd better wear gloves and use lots of glue to keep them on his arms..... Ted Arnold has really outdone himself with this clever picture book that explores figures of speech. His witty, rhyming text is full of energy and humor and complemented by marvelously bold and expressive artwork depicting each worrisome idiom. Youngsters will laugh out loud as they watch the narrator try to "keep his head together", "hold his tongue", "scream his lungs out", and "jump out of his skin." In the end, his parents reassure him by explaining that these figures of speech are just descriptive expressions. But the story ends just where it began when dad adds that he's glad they cleared up this misunderstanding, "We thought you'd lost your mind." Perfect for youngsters 6-10, More Parts is a delightful, very visual, manic romp that shouldn't be missed.

This book is hilarious-and oh- my 5 year old son loves it too!!The pictures of a little kid imagining what adults in his life could possibly mean as they tell him to "hold his tongue", or could he please " give his father a hand", are wondeful-I don't know who laughs more, my son or myself!!Enjoy this book!!

Our family loves this book!

Our kids (7, 3 and 2) LOVE this book! They laugh every time we read it together - which is often. So often, in fact, that our 3 year old has most of it memorized. The story is about a little boy who becomes very concerned about some of the strange things he hears the adults around him saying, like "Hold your tongue!" and "Please give me a hand!". The illustrations of these idioms are hilarious! Bravo to Tedd Arnold for a very entertaining book for kids and adults!

Warning: This book is ONLY for parents who don't mind reading the same book over and over again! My 3 year old is sitting next to me as I finish this review, repeating parts of 'More Parts' and asking me if we can read it AGAIN! :-) We highly recommend 'Parts' also. The two together would make a great gift! We're not so crazy about 'Even More Parts' though.
