A little too irreverent!

I heard that this book was a great Christian satire. It's not - just sarcasm and venom. First of all, if you're not British, its almost incomprehensible - most of the "so-called" humor will be lost on Americans - its so obscure and British. I read the whole book - thinking there must be a message or some alternative idea - there wasn't. If you're cup of tea is mocking everything about church, Christians, Spirit-filled Believers, and God Himself - you'll love this book.

I thought there would be a message in the humor - instead the author makes fun of everything sacred to Christians. I read the other reviews on Amazon and they were all raving and raving about how funny this book is - so I bought it. My mistake for listening to them. Anyone can mock, make fun, and criticize - but you should have an alternative if you do - this author doesn't.

He constantly promotes drinking and even drunkenness - and smoking - which I hate to see in a "so-called" Christian book because of teenagers and young people.

Yes, there are some funny things in the book. I was trying to overlook several implied, mild vulgarities - until he describes a dream he has and uses one of the events at the Cross while Jesus was hanging there suffering and dying - as joke. That was it for me.

I'm sure that the products of the modern, man-centered Gospel will love the vulgarities and the mockery of church and Christians - and everything holy - but I don't - I felt convicted about reading it.

I wasted my money - and I'm sorry. The book is now in the trash can. I live in a major city where the local newspaper says that after 10 pm - 50% of the drivers on the freeways are legally drunk. I think drinking is promoted enough by the alcohol industry without "so-called" Christian writers helping. Maybe its a great and wonderful thing where the writer lives - but I work with alcoholics who are addicted and have lost everything. That's not very funny.

Christian Beware!!!!! Buy a Bible study book instead.

About the Author
Lauren Costine, PhD, is an LA-based therapist specializing in therapy with for lesbians. In addition to her therapeutic practice, Costine is an educator, activist, administrator, and author. She is currently the Chief Clinician and Founder of The LGBT-Affirmative Track at BLVD Treatment Centers – an intensive outpatient treatment center in Hollywood. She was one of the founding members and developers of The LGBT Specialization in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University Los Angeles (AULA), the nation’s first LGBT-Affirmative program where she still teaches. Her involvement included the development and teaching of such popular courses as LGBT History & Myth, Lesbian Liberation and LGBT Community Action.. Professionally, she has presented workshops at various national and regional conferences and has published a number of articles in such magazines as SheWired, Addiction Professional Magazine and Smart Lesbian Online Magazine. A love letter to lesbians

As a therapist and as a lesbian, I found this book to be invaluable. Dr. Costine’s tone in this important book is warm and empathetic. The book takes the reader through a multifaceted explanation of how love addiction occurs and adds the much needed component of lesbian psychological and environmental factors that affect lesbians so strongly. The book is also a love letter to lesbians in that it is a wish for all lesbians to understand their own psyche and have the best chance at self love and love for others! I have already recommended this book to some lesbian therapy clients and find referring to this book so helpful.

Very interesting book on anatomy and evolution

I read page after page. I was at the last page when I recongnized.

This book is a cream of crops which came out from years of dedicated work by an outstanding researcher and educator of anatomy and evolution.

There are many traditional anatomy books which explain structure but sometimes readers were not satisfied with questions not explained by the books. Dr. Langdon faithfully applied sciences related with human evolution and explains human body structure and function from the unique perspectives of evolution.

If combined with traditional clinical purpose anatomy books, you will have very clear and precise understanding of anatomy.

I had the benefit of being one of Dr. Langdon's students many years ago.

The depth of his understanding of anatomy is difficult to fathom.

He never used a single note to guide his teachings. He didn't need them. He was capable of drawing any structure throughout its evolutionary development from memory.

The title of my review says it all: first rate. This book honors anatomy and evolutionary biology on every page. Nothing makes sense in biology, we are reminded, without evolution, and the author never loses sight of that truth.

This book is definitely a book that needs to be read by people that have lost their way. When you read it, it is kind of depressing in the beginning, but I promise, it gets better.

Hayden's parents just died in a car accident so that means her older brother gets custody of her. Hayden doesn't know why she is alive anymore and she despises the world now. What is the point of living if everything is messed up?

I don't really have a favorite part or character because this book was kind of a difficult read for me because of the subject matter. It made me sad.

BEFORE LIFE HAPPENED isn't your typical coming of age teenage romance story. It's a tough read and will have your emotions all over the map. Hayden was just involved in a tragic car accident that her parents did not survive. She is sixteen years old and has three older brothers. They get temporary custody of her and she wonders how everyone is able to move forward while she is stuck on the day of the accident.

You will get a glimpse into how Hayden is really feeling by her diary entries and your heart is going to break for her over and over again. You will find yourself praying that she can get her act together and find a way to move on and start to heal. I still can't believe BEFORE LIFE HAPPENED is a debut novel and I excited to see where this series is going to go. The characters are very real and you will be caught up in their troubles and lives in no time at all. I had a hard time putting this face paced novel down and I read it in one sitting. Isabel Curtis is going to be an author I am keeping on my radar.

Most notably, the issue of the reliability of low-discrepancy numbers in high dimensions is discussed in detail. The book also contains an introduction to the theory of copulæ as an extension to the modelling of correlation of financial securities. An entire chapter is dedicated to the evaluation of interest rate derivatives in the Brace-Gatarek-Musiela/Jamshidian framework by the aid of fast-convergence Monte Carlo simulations. What's more, for the first time, this book also gives a description of the construction of non-recombining trees. Whilst non-recombining trees are usually not viable in a production environment, they often are the very tool of last resort when Monte Carlo approximations to problems such as Bermudan swaptions are to be tested, and the tricks for the construction of non-recombining trees presented in this book are invaluable for that purpose.

About the Author
Peter Jäckel currently works at Commerzbank Securities in London as a quant in the front office product development and derivatives modelling group. Prior to that he worked within the NatWest Group/Royal Bank of Scotland Quantitative Research Centre. He started his career in finance with his employment at Nikko Securities' London operation.

Solid gold

Conflict of interest pervades the field of finance on every level including the intellectual level.
Often you might find books reviewed most favorably by
leading academic researchers to fall far short of the praise constituting a legal liability for the author's employer and
inducing a suspicion that the reviewer had material interests at stake.
For this reason we are grateful that Amazon has a liberal return policy. This book however you will not want to send back.
It hits the mark in several important aspects:
1. Level of detail.
The presentation is detailed enough for you to be able to translate the description into computer code but not so detailed that this step is immediate.
This allows an elegant and fluent style of writing.
Descriptions that are detailed enough to translate into code immediately almost certainly lack aesthetic qualities and one usually does not read them again them once the relevant information has been extracted. This is not the case here. I find myself browsing the material again after some algorithm has already been implemented and enjoying the experience.
The author has the ability to articulate complicated concepts clearly and without resort to heavy notation.
2. Mathematical rigour.
The mathematics is impeccable. In my own experience this can be said of fewer than 10% of the books in the field of finance.
The prerequisites are minimal. You have to know the most basic properties of Brownian motion (barely more than the definition)
and be familiar with the notion of a probability density.
Nonetheless several highly interesting subjects are treated in much detail (for example effective dimensionality reduction in conjunction with the application of low discrepancy sequences).
3. Choice of subject.
The techniques discussed are those used by leading investment banks. This is unsurprising since the author himself works at such an institution. The book is quite different from one devoted to Monte Carlo methods in physics, genetics or polymer science.
4. Physical appearance.
Page size, page layout, font selection and binding are all of high quality. The book has a wealth of diagrams communicating interesting information.

CD does not work

It is a book for mathematics lovers not financial oriented profesionals. I would not recomend this book for those looking to gain more practical knowledge on this subject.

I can NOT follow the math and NO CODE!

You better already know the basics of Monte Carlo Simulation
to get anything out of the book.
I STRONGLY disagree with one reviewer who thinks
all one needs to know is :
1) The definition of Brownian Motion and
2) What a Probability distribution is.
FAT chance.
The book requires knowing Linear Algebra, Probability,
PDEs, Stochastic Modelling, and SDEs to be of any use.
Where's the CODE, baby!
There are very few examples put into code!
One reviewer on Amazon.com, says the book is so
detailed you don't need code. Funny, I have never
seen anything "so detailed" that an example (code)
would make the explanation less clear!
