Mashi Rahmani is the CEO and founder of MMC, Inc, a leading HRO (Human Resources Outsourcing) firm, serving thousands of clients, both nationally and globally. Mr. Rahmani has also been the driving force behind the Innovative Management ApproachTM (IMA) portfolio of services. The IMATM model allows small and mid-sized companies partnering with MMC to compete in the marketplace with Fortune 500 Organizations, in order to attract quality talent. Before developing MMC, Rahmani worked for nearly ten years as a Senior Program Administrator at NASA, negotiating contracts between the government and private sectors, on bringing in key individuals and resources. Building on that experience, he was able to move forward with his own successful endeavor. Mashi and his company, MMC, have been recognized on numerous occasions by the Los Angeles Business Journal as a Top 15 Largest Employer and Top 20 Largest in Human Resources Services in the seventh largest economy in the world. Mashi earned his B.S. Degree in Air Transportation Management from the University of Houston/CL. He then attended the UCLA Anderson School to receive his MDE, before earning his Global MBA at TRIUM (NYU Stern, London School of Economics and HEC-Paris). Hofstadter's great achievement in Gödel, Escher, Bach was making abstruse mathematical topics (like undecidability, recursion, and 'strange loops') accessible and remarkably entertaining. Borrowing a page from Lewis Carroll (who might well have been a fan of this book), each chapter presents dialogue between the Tortoise and Achilles, as well as other characters who dramatize concepts discussed later in more detail. Way out of my comfort zone, but still great.

I'm here to witness that even people as seriously math-challenged as I am can participate in this wonderful book. It took me a *long* time to read-- I flipped back and forth, beat the pages up, asked my more math-oriented friends for help. I spent forever trying to solve the MU exercise. It was worth it. I still feel like I understood parts of it only in intuitive flashes, but those flashes showed me a room more interesting than most of the well-lit chambers ordinary books provide.
Reading Godel, Escher, Bach is like joining a club. People who see you reading it will open spontaneous conversations and often gift you with unexpected insights. (I had a fascinating conversation with a total stranger about Godel's theorem.)
Wish I could give more than five stars.

A Profound Meditation On Human Creativity

Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid debates, beautifully, the question of consciousness and the possibility of artificial intelligence. It is a book that attempts to discover the true meaning of "self."
As the book introduces the reader to cognitive science, the author draws heavily from the world of art to illustrate the finer points of mathematics. The works of M.C. Escher and J.S. Bach are discussed as well as other works in the world of art and music. Topics presented range from mathematics and meta-mathematics to programming, recursion, formal systems, multilevel systems, self-reference, self-representation and others.
Lest you think Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, to be a dry and boring book on a dry and boring topic, think again. Before each of the book's twenty chapters, Hofstadter has included a witty dialogue, in which Achilles, the Tortoise, and friends discuss various aspects that will later be examined by Hofstadter in the chapter to follow.
In writing these wonderful dialogues, Hofstadter created and entirely new form of art in which concepts are presented on two different levels simultaneously: form and content. The more obvious level of content presents each idea directly through the views of Achilles, Tortoise and company. Their views are sometimes right, often wrong, but always hilariously funny. The true beauty of this book, however, lies in the way Hofstadter interweaves these very ideas into the physical form of the dialogue. The form deals with the same mathematical concepts discussed by the characters, and is more than vaguely reminiscent of the musical pieces of Bach and printed works of Escher that the characters mention directly in their always-witty and sometimes hilarious, discussions.
One example is the "Crab Canon," that precedes Chapter Eight. This is a short but highly amusing piece that can be read, like the musical notes in Bach's Crab Canon, in either direction--from start to finish or from finish to start, resulting in the very same text. Although fiendishly difficult to write, the artistic beauty of that dialogue equals Bach's music or Escher's drawing of the same name.
As good as all this is (and it really is wonderful), it is only the beginning. Other topics include self-reference and self-representation (really quite different). The examples given can, and often do, lead to hilarious and paradoxical results.
In playfully presenting these concepts in a highly amusing manner, Hofstadter slowly and gently introduces the reader to more advanced mathematical ideas, like formal systems, the Church-Turing Thesis, Turing's Halting Problem and Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem.
Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, does discuss some very serious topics and it can, at times, be a daunting book to handle and absorb. But it is always immensely enjoyable to read. The sheer joy of discovering the puns and playful gems hidden in the text are a part of what makes this book so very special. Anecdotes, word plays and Zen koans are additional aspects that help make this book an experience that many readers will come to feel to be a turning point in their lives.
Like every other book written by Hofstadter, Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, has an index and a bibliography that must be noted as exceptionally well done.
Although filled with English wordplay, this book is in no way tied to the American origin of its author. For years, it was thought that Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, would be impossible to translate, but so far, it has successfully been translated into French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Swedish, Dutch and Russian.
A profound and beautiful meditation on human thought and creativity, this book is indescribably gorgeous and definitely one of a kind.

Escape from predestination

It seems highly appropriate that Douglas Hofstatder should re-release his epic work now. His central theme plays so eloquently in this place and time: Every system folds in on itself, be it physics, mathematics, or any form of language. All these systems are inherently self-referential, and as such, take on a life of their own. A life their creators could never imagine. Many reviewers have focused on the explicit messages of the book, their likes or dislikes, but the great beauty of this work lies within the realm of what it does not say. It is, no doubt, the most difficult book I have ever read, and I have to admit it took me several false starts to finally get through the thing. It is so incredibly deep - one cannot simply wade through it like a sci-fi novel. But if you take your time, spend, say about a year on it - work through the TNT exercises, discover the hidden messages the author has left, read the bibliography - and at some point it will strike you; the incredible richness of the message. The book, you, the world, all of it IS open. The pages of this universe are blank, unwritten. Dr. Hofstadter has woven a message of eternal optimism, one that transcends even the infinite depth to the tapestry of topics spread before us: The great freedom that we, nature's most remarkable matrix, are part of a future without destiny. Even if we were created, any purpose impressed upon us is lost in a cacophany of unexpected relationships. Deterministic, yet infinitely complex and unpredictable. We can never understand anything completely, and thus every life can experience the magic of observing that which cannot be explained. This is a book of wonders, and you will never regret the time you spent on it.

DISTINCTION 10
Millionaires think long-term. The middle class thinks short-term.

Society can be broken down into five groups of people: the very poor, poor, middle class, rich, and very rich. Each group of people thinks differently about money. Very poor people think day to day. Poor people think week to week. Middle-class people think month to month. Rich people think year to year. And very rich people think decade to decade.

There are three primary goals that can be found in the mind-sets of these five social groups. The primary goal for very poor and poor people is survival. The primary goal for middle-class people is comfort. And the primary goal for the rich and very rich is freedom.

The reason that very poor and poor people seek to survive and the middle class seeks to be comfortable is because they have a scarcity mentality. They believe there is not enough money for everyone to have more than enough. The rich and very rich know the truth: there is enough money for everyone to have more than enough.

What you believe about money has everything to do with how much money you will make. If you have a scarcity mentality, then you will seek to survive or just have enough to be comfortable. If you have an abundance mentality, you will seek freedom. The old saying “Seek and you will find” is true when it comes to your finances. You really do get what you look for in life. If you seek to survive, you will. If you seek to be comfortable, you will be. If you seek freedom, you will find it.

There is power in long-term thinking. It can and will make you rich if you make it a habit.

Let’s look further at each of these groups of people.

Thinking day to day, as very poor people do, is where you will find day laborers and street beggars. They typically earn less than $10,000 a year.

Thinking week to week, as poor people do, is living paycheck to paycheck and barely making ends meet. Poor people typically earn $10,000 to $25,000 a year.

Thinking month to month, as middle-class people do, is being concerned with monthly bills, such as mortgage payments, car payments, credit card payments, and other revolving accounts. The middle class typically earns $25,000 to $100,000 a year.

Thinking year to year, as rich people do, is where people start learning about fiscal responsibility, financial literacy, and investing. Rich people typically make $100,000 to $500,000 a year.

Thinking decade to decade, as the very rich do, is where you find business plans that reach far into the future. It is where people learn how to legally avoid taxes so they can keep their money working for them. It is where people learn how to pass their assets on to future generations without the government taking part of what they spent their lives building. Very rich people typically make well over $500,000 a year. Most very rich people consistently make a minimum of $1 million a year.

Stretch Your Thinking Further Into the Future

The longer you can stretch your thinking into the future, the richer you will become. Most multimillionaires I know personally have business plans that reach at least ten years into the future.

When I first started thinking year to year, my income really started to increase. I asked myself questions like: How can I double my income this year? How can I legally pay less in taxes this year? As I have seen this principle of long-term thinking in the lives of my mentors, it has challenged me to look further into my future. I now have business plans that go twenty years into the future. I spend time on a regular basis thinking about what I want my life to be like five, ten, and twenty years from now. Then I create plans for how to get there.

What would you like your life to be like ten years from now? Think about it and start planning for it. Thinking long-term requires patience. Patience is an asset in the life of millionaires. Impatience is a liability in the life of the middle class.

Middle-class people want instant gratification. I was like that for many years. Whatever I wanted, I charged to my credit card or put a little bit down and made payments on the balance. Now I wait for the things I want because my goal is more freedom, not comfort.

Rich and very rich people have developed the discipline of delayed gratification. Millionaires do today what others don’t, so they can have tomorrow what others won’t. The very poor, poor, and middle class will never be free. More and more freedom is the goal of the rich and very rich. They love to be in control of their lives.

The very poor, poor, and middle class have put control of their lives into the hands of others, which, ironically, are the hands of the rich and very rich. Millionaires value freedom over comfort—and because they do, they get both.

Because the middle class values comfort over freedom, they will never be free.

Think Long-Term in Every Area of Life

I want you to be aware that this principle of thinking long-term not only applies to your financial life, but to every area of life. It is wise to think long-term in your relationships. When you do, you will show more respect to others and think from a win-win perspective.

If you think short-term in your relationships, you will be looking for what others can do for you and end up using people as a means to an end. If you are someone who always uses people for your own gain, then chances are you will be a lonely person, especially in your later years.

Millionaires develop long-term relationships, which also helps them with their long-term financial success. They think about how they can best serve their families, friends, and clients.

When you reach the end of your life, it is the relationships you have developed that make you truly rich. Ask yourself on a regular basis how you can build deeper and stronger relationships with the people you love.

Just as there are people who are very poor financially, there are also people who are very poor emotionally. People who can’t love or be patient or kind, people who can’t forgive, and people who get angry easily are very poor emotionally. Focus on becoming rich emotionally as well as financially.

Becoming rich in your relationships is more than success. It is significance. It is fulfillment.

Financial success without relational fulfillment is not rewarding. Think long-term in your financial life and in your emotional life.

It is wise to think long-term about your physical health. If you do, then you will make the time to exercise your body and eat more healthily. If you don’t think long-term in your health, then you will neglect exercise and eat too much junk. Chances are you will become overweight and live with a low amount of energy. Thinking long-term in your health empowers you with energy to become more successful financially.

Every area of life is connected, and thinking long-term in each area will improve every area.

It is wise to think long-term in your mental life. What would you like to spend your life thinking about? Is there a certain subject that inspires you? What do you enjoy giving your mental energy to?

People who spend their lives thinking about things that excite and inspire them live with incredible peace of mind. People who could be considered very poor mentally are those who complain and spend their mental energy on things they dislike.

Mentally poor people live with a lot of stress. Would you like to increase your peace of mind? If so, then start thinking long-term in your mental life. Spend your mental energy on the subjects you enjoy. Dedicate your life to the fields of interests that inspire you. Find a way to make money in the areas you enjoy thinking about.

This is a secret of many millionaires: they do what they love to do to make money. This makes them rich mentally and financially. Think long-term in every area of your life, not just financially.

Set More Long-Term Goals

In order to move from the poor to the middle class, or from the middle class to the rich, or from the rich to the very rich, just start planning your life further into the future. Set more long-term goals for your life. People overestimate what they can accomplish in one year and underestimate what they can accomplish in ten.

When you have long-term goals you will find it easier to develop perseverance. All millionaires have had to persevere through challenges in their lives. In order to see your dreams fulfilled you have to become a “whatever it takes” kind of person. Middle-class people give up when the pressure is on. Since they value comfort, they don’t persevere when the going gets tough. Millionaires go the second mile, and the third, and the fourth. They do whatever it takes to experience abundance. Since they think long-term, they keep on keeping on until they achieve abundance and freedom.

Millionaires think long-term. The middle class thinks short-term.

Why five stars?

Frankly, there's nothing new in this book. But it is a concise description of what it takes to become wealthy. Will reading the book make you a millionaire? Of course not. But it will put you on the right track. It is a quick read. I recommend reading it straight through in one sitting...then reviewing a chapter a day until your actions model millionaire behavior. Dr. Thomas Stanley's Millionaire Next Door and Millionaire Mind provide plenty of evidence to support what Smith talks about in his book. The strength of this particular book is that 10 clear easy-to-understand steps are described so that you don't have to parse through the statistics to find out what works and what doesn't. Instead of slipping cash in a card this holiday season for that high school or college student, give them a copy of this book. Note that this book is not about greed. It is about acquiring wealth and being a good person at the same time. The two are compatible.

Simply phenomenal!

You'll not find a more simplified, boiled down analysis of what separates the rich from, well, everybody else. No, this isn't a book talking about how rich people are a bunch of greedy SOB's. Nor is it talking about some get-rich-quick scheme or how you can make millions of dollars overnight. While the book may be short, it's quite simple in its approach answering the question, why do some people have more money than others?

The top ten distinctions the author walks us through outline the basic idea that how successful you are is largely determined by your thoughts and your actions. Most millionaires have achieved their success because they had the right mindset to become millionaires. They had goals and sacrificed what they had to to get there, but they also kept their frame of mind in the right place, asking the right questions, taking risks, and developing ideas.

Because of its simplicity, Top Ten Distinctions makes it clear that anybody has it within themselves to become a millionaire. Sure, some have more hurdles to cross than others, but these things can all be overcome and financial success-financial freedom-can be achieved by anyone who puts their mind to it. The distinctions between millionaires and middle class are not that millionaires have more money, they were just determined not to live out a middle class existence that often struggles to pay bills, afford vacations, or are living from paycheck to paycheck.

Financial freedom is available to all. Once you know what separates those that have much from those that don't, you can begin to mold yourself to have the mindset that allows you to become free financially. Oh, and just for a quick preview, my favorite distinction was number four: Millionaires believe they must be generous. The middle class believes it can't afford to give. I can't tell you how many times I've thought that I can't afford to donate here or help that person there. I'm off to change my own mindset!

A good reminder that people shouldn't conform to just being and working for a paycheck. It takes a lot of practice and applying these principles in order to see any results of traces of financial success but what matters is never to stop dreaming.

Good, simple source for city, county population

I have used this publication for years. It is a great, simple, speedy reference to city & county locations, population, and market rankings.
Maps are clear, uncluttered, ideal for communication and planning.
Other sources are more detailed with census data and HH income rankings (Bill Publications Sales & Marketing Management Annual Survey), but this is the easiest, low cost publication available.

Fantastic tool for genealogists!

I am a genealogical researcher who does a lot of applications for lineage societies. This atlas has proven to be invaluable because I frequently need names of counties to go with towns. The pages with each state map give an alpha listing of towns and with each town the name of its county. You can combine what you find in this atlas with cross-referencing from other books such as Everton's Handybook for Genealogists and see if the town was in a different county at an earlier date. I'm now on the prowl for a second copy of this atlas to donate to my local genealogical library!

  Not too shabby.

  This is a neat little book, despite the name 'Black & Decker', which I stay away from like the plague.
  
  As a girl, I know very little on carpentry in general. This isn't a bad book to have to give you a starting point and some little projects to put together to gauge yourself. I always liked the idea of fixing up the house--but liking the idea, and being able to ACTUALLY DO IT are totally different things. So, my first project I started with was the workbench plan, and modified it a bit to suit my needs, just to see if I had a knack for this kind of thing. I can't even begin to say how much I like the plan for the workbench. It ends up making a very sturdy table. (I added locking wheels to the bottom of mine, and used 2 sheets of 3/4" MDF board as the top instead of plywood.)
  
  This book obviously isn't meant for someone who already knows it all. As the title says, 'Carpentry for Homeowners', not 'Carpentry for Carpenters'. So, if you've got some projects you want to try out, this is certainly a nice addition to your library--even if you're just a tad bit interested. The first 100 pages are just telling you what certain tools are, what they're used for, and how to use them. Kind of basic stuff, but for me, it was a good start.
  
  One thing I don't like about the book is that it's glue-bound. What I mean by that is that it's glued to the cover and all that, and so it has a tendency to flop closed on you. Hardly functional if you're trying to learn WHAT to do WHILE doing it. The easiest way to fix this is to take it to your local Kinko's, or somewhere else that binds books, and have them chop the spine off, laminate the covers, and coil bind it for you. (Be ready to pay ~$12 for this, though) Now, you have a functional book you can leave open without having to weigh it down!

  Very clear and well explained book.

  I bought this book for a garage project of mine and the decent reviews it had. I must say the reviews are well deserved. This book offers plenty of photos and well explained "how-to" guide lines. Detailed explanation with photos of all the tools you'll need for your project. I can now do my projects with confidence considering I am a novice at carpentry. Excellent choice for the novist.
