Great read. A dark twist fitting nicely into the Star Wars universe.

Pretty darn good!

When the Imperial prison barge Purge suffers thruster failure out in the boondocks, they appear to be in a lot of trouble. Hope presents itself in the form of an Imperial Star Destroyer that is nearby, apparently abandoned. And so, a team of engineers from the prison barge goes over to see if they can collect enough spare parts to repair their own ship. But, what the engineers find on the Star Destroyer is horror beyond their darkest nightmares!

OK, I must admit that I am often intrigued by crossover books - in this case one combining Star Wars and the popular zombie motif. Like all books, crossovers range from the ridiculous to the sublime, with the vast majority of them falling somewhere in between. As for myself, I found this book to be pretty darn good.

I thought that the author did a good job of combining Star Wars and zombies. I found the story to be reasonably written (the story has to be reasonable if it's going to be in Science Fiction), and yet nicely scary. Who was going to live and who was going to die? The author kept you guessing right up to the end of the book. Right, I really enjoyed this book, and don't hesitate to recommend it.

Not bad but could have been better.

Death Troopers holds much promise at the outset. Zombies in Star Wars. Need I say more? And there are zombies. My main problem is it takes so long to see them. There are 234 pgs in the novel but the Zombies only appear on page 133. I don't know about you but I want to see zombies no more than 60 pgs in (1/4), not halfway.

I was also unsatisfied with the ending. Still and all it held my attention. It was also cool to see Han and Chewbacca. Both are well written and act the way you'd expect them too, especially pre-carbonite Han.

How cool would it have been to have Boba Fett instead of Han and Chewie?

Fett - "You paid me to bring the prisoners in alive, now you want me to kill them?"
Vader - "It shouldn't be too difficult, they're already dead."
Fett - "I'm chargin you double!"
Vader - "As you wish."

Worth the read.

Cosmetic science is an interdisciplinary science involving chemistry, biology, formulation science, pharmacology, marketing, and law. With an increasing number of cosmetic products aimed at special target audiences and gaining importance with consumers, the need for innovation and creative thinking to address the cosmetic industry’s challenges has never been more apparent.

Designed as an educational and training text at both the fundamental and practical levels, this book meets that need through its clear and easily understandable review of cosmetics and over the counter (OTC) drug-cosmetic products. The topics include general physiological, pharmaceutical and formulation knowledge, and quality control considerations for decorative and personal care products. In the first two chapters, the authors present general concepts and a legislative overview for cosmetics. The second part of the subsequent chapters deal with decorative care, skin care, hair care, oral and dental care, and finally other (such as hair removal products and sunless tanners) product types.

Readers relying on this book come away understanding cosmetics and personal care products – including their regulation, main characteristics, ingredients, formulation, testing and packaging. About the Author

Gabriella Baki is an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics at the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UT CPPS). She serves as the main instructor in UT CPPS’s undergraduate program, the BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design Major. Dr. Baki is a pharmacist, graduated in 2008 from the University of Szeged, Hungary and from where she also has a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics.

Kenneth Alexander is Professor of Pharmacy at The University of Toledo and has been there since 1972. He developed the Industrial Pharmacy graduate program at this institution and is currently its Coordinator. In 2003, he developed the BSPS Pharmaceutics Major and, in 2011, the Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design Major and is the currently the Coordinator for both undergraduate programs. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science and the University of Rhode Island.

Outstanding!!

I got this for my daughter (high school) but spent almost the entire night reading it myself.
In general, competition problem books are just a collection of problems categorized by some loose theme. In this book, the author shows you how to solve problems that at first seem to be almost impossible to solve by constructing a general problem solving approach for different classes of problems. This has the remarkable effect of automatically making the student think about problems from a different perspective and not get nervous when they see unfamiliar problems.

Typically, one rarely uses words such as "suspenseful," "breath-taking," etc. when talking about math books. But, at many occasions, I couldn't wait to see how the author approaches these problems. In many cases, I thought that the algebra would be long and tedious but on every occasion was pleasantly surprised to see how the techniques taught in the book actually made the solutions unfold naturally and elegantly.

You will really learn problem solving skills from this book.

Mind and Intelligence

Almost impossible to comprehend the supreme genius and the mind of Joseph Needham. His concepts of biochemistry were far far ahead of his time: cellular organization. integrative levels, and other vast concepts. To learn Chinese in middle age, study it exhaustively and publish the definitive history of Chinese science. Think of it! His biology rules today. His philosophy and mysticism likewise. History is not yet over.....maybe, but mind survives. Donald Macdonald

At the same time he points out differences between Chinese society, governed by an Emperor through the imperial bureaucracy, and the Europe's feudal system.

About the Author

Catherine Hapka is the author of many books for children of all ages. She is too tall to ride ponies, though her mare, Gerri, still looks like one. Catherine takes riding lessons twice a week and lives on a farm with Gerri, three goats, a small flock of chickens, and too many cats.

Anne Kennedy lives in Lewis Center, Ohio, with her husband, Jack, and her rescued dog, Banjo. When she's not illustrating beautiful books, Anne enjoys spending time with her horse, doing dressage, and trail riding.

For a grandchild

My granddaughter loves horses & she was struggling with reading starting into the 1st grade. I got this for her on the Kindle Fire to encourage her to start reading for pleasure - not just because she has to. With the work the school put in with her and books like this about topics she really likes, she has now excelled in reading! Another plus are the values/morales these books teach - the children are presented with a situation where there is a right & a wrong... it follows their decisions in dealing with those situations & the final outcome based on those decisions well.

Pony Scouts: The Trail Ride

One of my five year old twins discovered the Pony Scouts series at the library. Since then, we have borrowed many of the Pony Scouts books. This series of easy reader books was written by Catherine Hapka and illustrated by Anne Kennedy.

The Pony Scouts is a club made up of three girls. Jill seems to be the leader of the group by default because she lives on a farm with the ponies. Meg and Annie are her friends who love everything to do with ponies.

In The Trail Ride, Jill and Meg and Annie are having a riding lesson. Their mother is distracted by the arrival of the farrier, and instructs them not to trot. Meg says that they are ready to go on a trail ride because they can steer their ponies around the cones set up in the ring. The other girls are reluctant, but they go along with Meg’s idea. On the trail ride, they get lost but the ponies know how to get home. Jill’s mother is not happy; the girls point out that they didn’t trot, but Jill’s mother says that they are too young to go on a trail ride without an adult. The girls accept responsibility for their actions and promise not to do it again.

I really liked this installment of the series. The girls demonstrate that they are good friends, and they don’t let Meg take the blame for leaving the ring, and they say that they all made the decision and that Pony Scouts stick together. I liked the message that it isn’t okay to disobey instructions, to accept responsibility for disobeying, and to stick together with friends.

I also liked that this story introduces children to some more horse related terminology. The farrier only plays an indirect role in the story, but it was informative to learn a new term.

I would recommend Pony Scouts: The Trail Ride. This book is written at a second grade reading level and will appeal to children from kindergarten to second grade.

Adorable book, particularly for horse lovers

I absolutely love all the books in the Pony Scouts series. Story lines and illustrations are very cute. Plus, as a former "barn rat" I love that they use a lot of horse-world terms and even have a glossary page in the back of each book. My daughter is only 2 but loves hearing these stories and has already picked up several barn terms... For example she now says she is putting the "tack" on her toy ponies when she pretends to put on their saddles. Too cute.
