Trey Grainger manages the Search Technology Development group at CareerBuilder.com. His search experience includes handling multi-lingual content across dozens of markets/languages, machine learning, genetic algorithm and user group based relevancy tuning, geo-spatial search and validation, and work on customized payload scoring models, data mining, clustering, and recommendations. Trey is the Founder of Celiaccess.com, a gluten-free search engine, and is a frequent speaker at Lucene and Solr-related conferences.

Timothy Potter is an architect on the Big Data team at Dachis Group, where he focuses on large-scale machine learning, text mining, and social network analysis. Tim has worked extensively with Lucene and Solr technologies and has been a speaker at Lucene Revolution. He is a contributing author to Taming Text (Manning 2012) and holds several US Patents related to J2EE-based enterprise application integration. He blogs at thelabdude.blogspot.com.

Excellent guide to Solr/Lucene - No matter what you already know, you will learn something from this book

This is a truly outstanding book. In the 25+ years that I have been engaged in the software profession, I can unequivocally state that this is one of the best software books I have ever read. It is a rare technical book that provides useful (i.e. "actionable") information whether you are a novice to search in general or Solr/Lucene in particular or a battle hardened veteran of the search software biz.

The prose is clear, jargon free and non-recursive, meaning that you don't already have to know what they are talking about to know what they are talking about (if you have ever been there, you know what I mean). The organization is well thought out, moving from basic search and Solr/Lucene concepts like precision and recall, text analysis, query parsing, inverted token mapping, faceting and scoring (Lucene style!) to cutting-edge aspects of search like distributed search (scaling), handling multiple languages and performance tuning considerations. The later chapters go into every important aspect of Solr with the same clarity and thoroughness as the introductory chapters.

When you finish this book, you will have the foundation necessary to tackle real world information discovery problems using Solr. Combined with the classic Lucene In Action by McCandless, Hatcher and Gospodnetic, your next step will be to dive into the fascinating world of Open Source Search with source code, JIRA tickets, patches and discussion threads. Every technical book is a snapshot of a technology at some point in its evolution. The timing of this book is fortunate as Solr has recently seen some significant advances in distribution and scalability, which are thoroughly covered. Nevertheless, no book can stay current (that is just their nature) especially with technology that is evolving as rapidly as Solr/Lucene. The authors acknowledge this fact and provide excellent step-by-step introductions on how to get involved in the Open Source process such as how to download and compile the latest (nightly) source and how to write and/or install a JIRA patch. This is where the real fun begins. Armed with the knowledge that you gain from this book, you can enter this exciting arena with confidence.

Absolutely Essential for anyone learning Solr

I believe this book will be soon be regarded as the authoritative reference for Apache Solr. There is a lot of information in this guide but it is organized excellently and very easy to follow. I read between 10-20 tech books a year and this is the best I have seen in a quite a while. The topics covered will be relevant whether you are new to Solr or are an experienced Solr Admin looking for information on SolrCloud and advanced tuning concepts.

Don't be afraid of the size of the book, it really deserves your time!

I was very happy when this book was announced and was looking forward to reading the full version of it. Finally i got it a few weeks ago!
After reading the introduction i realized this will be one of those books you will want to have on your shelf.
It promises a deep walk through on Solr capabilities and its almost 600 pages don't disappoint you!
Understanding Solr is not an easy task, however the authors manage to explain every topic with good language and clear examples.
I strongly recommend "text analysis", "facet search" and "taking Solr to the next level" chapters, which are full of insights and "ahh" moments. (At least for those who don't have a deep understanding of Solr).
Don't be afraid of the size of the book, it really deserves your time! Thanks guy for good work

Susan Bassnett is Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Warwick and the head of the Centre for British and Comparative Cultural Studies. She also writes poetry and is a practising translator.

This includes exploring how the acts themselves and explanations for them on the web are picked up and represented in mainstream television news media or Big Media, through the journalistic and editorial uses of words, phrases, graphics, images, and videos. It analyses how interpretations of the term 'radicalisation' are shaped by news representations through investigating audience responses, understandings and misunderstandings. Transnational in scope, this book seeks to contribute to an understanding of the connectivity and relationships that make up the new media ecology, especially those that appear to transcend the local and the global, accelerate the dissemination of radicalising discourses, and amplify media/public fears of political violence.

Super helpful repair and maintenance manual.

This Is a great repair and service manual. It has a ton of reference photos and illustrations. I gave it 4 stars only due to the fact that I find the page numbering system a little confusing, and sometimes the photos are explaining the last job, on a page that is talking about something else. Layout issues; but, the content isn't jeopardized by those few things. I think they were just trying to fill every page, and use the book space by efficiently. It has a lot of tips and reminders on each job. You can tell that these guys were taking great, helpful notes as they were doing each of these jobs, and shared little insider reminders and cautions. I can't wait to get my parts so I can get some grease on that book :)

Not perfect, but MUCH better than Clymer

I purchased the Clymer manual when I bought my motorcycle to have on hand...It really was not very helpful.

I bought new sprockets and it was a fairly involved process to change them out (had to remove the whole back wheel, etc.) The Clymer manual (maybe I'm just dumb) just was a pain to try and find how to do this simple task.

I purchased the haynes and so far it has been MUCH better. Can actually see the photos and the layout just makes a lot more sense...much easier to find what is needed (and in fewer pages strangely enough). Plus I love the hard cover of the Haynes manual, it keeps the page I'm working on open better. Haynes is definitely worth the extra cost.

great manual, information on the Drifter variant

One of the few manuals that actually has useful information for the Drifter variant of the Vulcan 800 as that model has significant differences from the other models. The pictures are black and white, but are clear and useful. A manual of any kind is a necessity when doing anything more than the very basic maintenance, and this one seems to be one of the better ones.

Not my favorite from this author

I had some issues with this book. OK, one issue primarily. I didn't like the hero. That's a pretty big obstacle to overcome. In fact, I found myself rooting for "the other guy" to win the heroine. This, even though she was already married and I hate adultery storylines. I didn't dislike the entire book, but I just couldn't get excited about the romance.

Damien, the Earl of Windermere, only married Cynthia because of a bad game of cards. He got drunk on his 21st birthday and lost his mother's ancestral home. He actually lost it to a friend, but that friend was just as loaded and lost it to a third party. He never got over it and he never forgave Julian, the friend who carted his unconscious butt away from the card game before securing the property. Over the years, Damien has tried to buy back the home, but the new owner refused, until now. Damien can get the property back when he marries the owner's niece.

I won't get into the particulars of how it all plays out. The bottom line is I thought Damien's treatment of Cynthia was abominable... He had no faith in her. He accused her of things she didn't do. He took no stock in her intelligence. He insulted her and yet because he wanted to get in her pants, we are supposed to think this is a romance to root for? At least Julian recognized that she was a woman of worth. It took Damien way too long to reach the same very obvious conclusion. For much of the book it felt like the only reason Damien wanted to keep her was because he wanted to sleep with her and simply because he did not want Julian to have her. That is pathetic. On top of that, I felt like his animosity towards Julian was based on a very flimsy premise. Julian wasn't the one responsible for his stupid behavior as a young man. Julian just carted his drunk-butt home. That is not a reason to start their ridiculous vendetta.

I did like Cynthia. She managed to transform herself by picking herself up by the bootstraps. And she managed to make a difference in the lives of others who were worse off than she was. I also have to give her kudos for staying faithful given what she had to deal with.

I thought the love scenes were good. And the resolution played out fairly well. But overall, this wasn't one of Miranda Neville's more satisfying reads.

Terrific start, fun middle, too-pat ending

If you love fluent, elegant writing, effortlessly accurate history and emotionally complicated premises, try this book. I just bought it on a whim and holy moley, I dropped everything to read it. Yes, it's good. And I'm happy to have procrastinated with it. (And even happier to discover this author. She's written quite a few. Yay.)

A textile manufacturer's heiress is married to a nobleman-diplomat who has accepted a devil's bargain to regain his mother's estate, a property he lost to an erstwhile friend in a youthful game of chance. The Earl of Windermere holds his nose to marry the Birmingham bumpkin but takes off soon after consummating the marriage and she is left to fend for herself. This she does by wintering in London and making a few friends, one of whom is her husband's frenemy, now Duke of Denford. Old emnities and class divisions are just some of the obstacles the two face, not to mention a year's worth of preconceived notions, disappointments and mistrust.

You might enjoy this if you've enjoyed Mary Balogh or Grace Burrowes. The perspectives of H/h are beautifully delineated, and their initial gulf heartbreakingly wide. Midway through I couldn't wait to know what happened next and how in God's name he'd redeem himself with her. (As others point out, he's not the take responsibility and suck it up fantasy hero populating most romances, but an imperfect man whose colossal mistake in youth sets his course for life and leaves him with a few idee fixe about who shared the blame for it.)

Having finished it, I will say it was enjoyable as the two negotiated common ground and their evolving passion. The last act of the story involved a half-hearted, half-baked crime, which came out of nowhere and resolved without much to-do; but all in all, I had a good time here. No wish to re-read this, so ultimately not 5 stars for me.

What's gone wrong?

I pre-ordered this title and settled down to read it with high levels of anticipation, only to find it disappointing.
In doing so, I was in no way influenced by other reviews, because I read this story the day it was released, before any reviews had been posted.
I found the writing, for the most part, flat. The H is a pathetic whinger who will most likely spend his whole life blaming others for mistakes for which he should take sole responsibility. The only thing in his favour is his recognition that his actions have driven her into the arms of another man and that he can't condemn her for her "unfaithfulness".
Moreover, the alienated friend is unbelievable and the plot is downright irritating.
I tried to like the h, but she is implausible (her reminiscences of the wedding scene made me cringe - seriously, given what had happened previously, what did she expect?).
Finally, if we are to believe her almost lover's suggestion that she was frightened into marriage, her bullying uncle is a most unconvincingly invisible villain.
I am in no way tempted to continue with this series. And that surprises me.

Brownstein and Iodoral are simply miraculous!!!

My daughter has been ill for a number of years with hypothyroidism and associated issues. We searched the region for a doctor and finally found a wonderful physician who worked with her, prescribed Armour Thyroid and a number of supplements to get her back in balance after the years of Synthroid, Despite some improvements, it was not until I read Dr. David Brownstein's book on the subject of iodine deficiency that we decided we would give this a try. And no, we didn't get any blessing from anyone.

My husband, daughter and myself, all used liquid iodine and did the paint test to see if we were deficient, which we all were. Based upon a significant amount of research we decided to take a specific amount, starting last Monday, June 14. What has happened is NOTHING less that a miracle.

My daughter, who has hideous outbreaks of hives, had no hives during the first three days, had two outbreaks on the 3rd day, but they were noticeably small and did not last near as long. Secondly, she has so much more energy and is able to get through the day without an afternoon nap, whereas before this iodine, the fatigue drove her to nap every afternoon. Thirdly, her voice, which had been very hoarse since before she was diagnosed has cleared and her attitude is much more positive now. These are just of the improvements we have seen in her, but they are remarkable when you understand her long journey and the insane number of doctors she has been through. For the first time in 10 years, I am getting my daughter back.

As far as my husband is concerned, he has hypothyroidism as well and he has noticed considerable improvement in energy, muscle strength, attitude, and the puffiness is starting to leave his face, his joint pain has also improved to the degree that it has almost completely dissipated, and keep in mind this is only ONE WEEK on the Iodoral.

As for my own improvements, my former level of energy has returned, joint pain from several injuries has lessened considerably, I no longer have a number of cravings that used to plague me and the list goes one.

It is clear, once again, that the FDA, Big Pharma, the food industry and the AMA are doing their best to get us fat, break us down and keep us sick. Everywhere we turn, essentials to our quality of life are being depleted or destroyed and we wonder why our health care costs are out of control. If one is diligent to read, research and study the findings in Dr. Brownstein's book, you will be amazed and committed to using the information the quality of your life.

This book and Iodoral, which you can also find on Amazon, have been miraculous in our lives.

This Book Invokes a Renaissance in the Use of Iodine

Iodine, Why You Need It and Why You Cant Live Without It by David Brownstein MD is written for the lay reader, however, all health care professionals should find the information useful in clinical practice.

Brownstein says we are in the "Medical Dark Ages" concerning iodine supplementation, and his book attempts to invoke a Renaissance. David Bronstein MD has a clinical practice in the goiter belt of Michigan, and is involved with an ongoing iodine research project with Guy Abraham MD and George Flechas MD.

According to Brownstein, iodine is safe and beneficial, preventing not only goiter, but also preventing the many thyroid cysts, nodules and auto-immune thyroid disease rampant in the population. Iodine is anti-microbial, anti-parasitic, anti-cancer, important for hormone production, reverses fibrocystic breast disease, and shrinks ovarian and thyroid cysts. It may be our most important preventive measure against breast cancer.

The book dispels a number of myths about Iodine supplementation.

Myth number one: There is no iodine deficiency because of Iodized Salt.

The iodine in Iodized salt is not very bio-available, and government surveys show decreasing Iodine levels in the population. Brownstein found that 90% of his patients were iodine deficient based on a 24 urine test for excreted iodine after a 50 mg loading dose.

Myth Number two: Too much Iodine above the RDA of 150 mcg is not safe.

In reality Iodine supplementation is very safe. The average Japanese diet contains 12 mg per day which is 100 times the RDA in the US. In the event of a nuclear power plant accident, the government gives everyone 50 mg. of Iodine to prevent thyroid cancer.

A chapter is devoted to iodine deficiency and fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer. Brownstein presents case reports of women with fibrocystic disease as well as breast cancer who benefit from iodine supplementation. Another chapter devoted to the thyroid describes patients with Graves' disease and Hashimoto's disease who benefit from iodine supplementation.

Iodine tablets are inexpensive and widely available as a nutritional supplement called Iodoral without a prescription. Another book, Breast Cancer and Iodine, by David Derry MD PhD, is also recommended.

Answers the WHY but not the HOW

I had already read plenty of information about why iodine is good for you and can heal many diseases. This is primarily what Dr. Brownstein talks about in the book, which is great, but what I needed at this point was a summary of the protocol an that is not included in the book. You won't find a list of what to take when, the different supplements are scattered throughout the book and dosages are ambiguous. Dr. Brownstein, you come out with a new edition every year so please in the 5th edition include one page that lists each supplement and the amount to take at the correct time of day. Thank you!
