Developing Children's Critical Thinking through Picturebooks: A guide for primary and early years students and teachers, by Mary Roche

This accessible text will show students and class teachers how they can enable their pupils to become critical thinkers through the medium of picturebooks. By introducing children to the notion of making-meaning together through thinking and discussion, Roche focuses on carefully chosen picturebooks as a stimulus for discussion, and shows how they can constitute an accessible, multimodal resource for adding to literacy skills, while at the same time developing in pupils a far wider range of literary understanding.

By allowing time for thinking about and digesting the pictures as well as the text, and then engaging pupils in classroom discussion, this book highlights a powerful means of developing children’s oral language ability, critical thinking, and visual literacy, while also acting as a rich resource for developing children’s literary understanding. Throughout, Roche provides rich data and examples from real classroom practice.

This book also provides an overview of recent international research on doing ‘interactive read alouds’, on what critical literacy means, on what critical thinking means and on picturebooks themselves.

Lecturers on teacher education courses for early years or primary levels, classroom teachers, pre-service education students, and all those interested in promoting critical engagement and dialogue about literature will find this an engaging and very insightful text.

"This book is exactly what it claims to be on the cover – it is a well-mapped guide for classroom teachers, students or parents who are looking for ways to engage young students in reading activities that will develop their critical literacy and their critical thinking skills. […] I would recommend this book to all primary school teachers, as well as to second-level English and SEN teachers." – Jean Johnston, ILSA Quarterly

"This book brings together into one voice the best of an academic, scholar and educational practitioner working to develop the quality of the educational experience for children in circumstances where values of humanity often seem to be, at best ignored, and at worst felt to be voilating contradictions" - Mary Huxtable, Educational Journal of Living Theories

"I would cerntainly recommend this book for teachers eager to put their students at the heart of an authentic learning environment where teachers and pupils create and negotiate meaning together" - Duncan McCarthy, InTouch Magazine

Critical thinking and talk through picture books
By Ann Marie
Having read Mary Roche’s book recently, it comes as no surprise to learn that it was shortlisted for the prestigious UKLA Academic Book Award 2015 and highly commended by the judging panel. For it is quite simply a quality publication on the subject of developing children’s critical thinking through picture books and suitable for a wide audience, including teachers at primary and second level and parents in the home. What I love about the book is its accessibility, scholarship and inclusion of examples of the Critical Thinking and Book Talk (CT&BT) approach from real classroom practice. In addition, as a secondary teacher and book lover I find the author’s focus on student voice and the development of students’ critical thinking, literacy skills and literary understanding compelling. Importantly, Roche makes clear that the CT&BT approach is inclusive of diversity. In the final section of the book, Roche gives practical advice on choosing books and setting up discussions, and helpfully lists some picturebooks by topic. I regard this book as an essential guide and resource for educators at all levels in the education system and for parents eager to promote authentic and high quality learning environments with children and young people.

An excellent book for teachers
By Amazon Customer
An excellent book for teachers, student teachers, teacher educators, parents, book lovers and anybody else who might like to deepen their understanding of how picturebooks can be used inside and outside the classroom. Quotes and transcripts from conversations with children about picturebooks add significantly to the authenticity and value of Roche's approach. Roche's voice and experience can be heard throughout the book, which is light, but thoughtful, read.

for parents too
By Liam C.
I'm a parent and I got this book a few months ago on the advice of a sister who has taught elementary school for years. At first I thought it was going to be another academic blah blah book. It's not. Stick with it and you'll never be able to approah your kids' picture books in the same way. I don't know what teachers would say, but for this parent it made me rethink my assumptions about reading with my kids. Great work.

"Transcendent." —The New York Times Book Review

"Flawless. . . another masterpiece from an author who seems incapable of writing anything that's less than brilliant." —NPR

From the award-winning author of Boy, Snow, Bird and Mr. Fox comes an enchanting collection of intertwined stories.

Playful, ambitious, and exquisitely imagined, What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours is cleverly built around the idea of keys, literal and metaphorical. The key to a house, the key to a heart, the key to a secret—Oyeyemi’s keys not only unlock elements of her characters’ lives, they promise further labyrinths on the other side. In “Books and Roses” one special key opens a library, a garden, and clues to at least two lovers’ fates. In “Is Your Blood as Red as This?” an unlikely key opens the heart of a student at a puppeteering school. “‘Sorry’ Doesn’t Sweeten Her Tea” involves a “house of locks,” where doors can be closed only with a key—with surprising, unobservable developments. And in “If a Book Is Locked There’s Probably a Good Reason for That Don't You Think,” a key keeps a mystical diary locked (for good reason).

Oyeyemi’s tales span multiple times and landscapes as they tease boundaries between coexisting realities. Is a key a gate, a gift, or an invitation? What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours captivates as it explores the many possible answers.

From School Library Journal
Keys are central to the short stories in this collection; they can either open or lock away something of significance for the characters. All of the tales are intertwined with themes of search and possible retrieval, which will draw young adult readers into worlds that are sometimes secretive and sometimes elusive; they will be able to easily identify with that search of self that so often comes with adolescence. The characters are relatable to YA readers, from the young woman looking for her long-lost mother and heritage to the hopeful music fan wanting to find the best in a broken artist. These worlds and characters are complex and passionate, and readers will find themselves longing for more once the stories end. Even though the settings are quite strange (a locked library, a city of stopped clocks, a marshland of the drowned), there's a complexity here and the brilliant prose gently pulls readers in, encouraging them to identify with the characters. VERDICT A must-add to libraries, this work will appeal to fans of literary fiction.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

Review
“Magical and show stopping.” —Elle.com

“Oyeyemi so expertly melds the everyday, the fantastic and the eternal, we have to ask if the line between ‘real’ and ‘unreal’ is murkier than we imagined—or to what extent a line exists at all. . . The deeper one descends into the fabulist warrens of these stories, the more mystery and menace abound, and with each story I had the delightful and rare experience of being utterly surprised. . . Transcendent.” —The New York Times Book Review

Oyeyemi seems to be incapable of writing anything that's not wholly original. . . Oyeyemi manages to make the story both realistic and fantastical, and the characters are rendered with grace and compassion. . . “Oyeyemi writes with mastery, sometimes keeping her prose sparse and declarative only to unleash a bounty of description and humor a sentence later.” —Entertainment Weekly

Reading the book is a lot like dreaming. there is lots of striking imagery
By George W. Lynn
Reading the book is a lot like dreaming. there is lots of striking imagery, amazing scenes that clearly mean something, but damned if I know what exactly. for the most part anyway. Here the key is the key in each story, but beyond that I can't really say. Like most of my dreams, it's all a bit disjointed and disorganized and I don't get many explanations with my dreams either. but I don't always want to wake up and there are some stories here where I feel much the same.

Weird, sometimes wonderful, but not always
By CS
3.5 Stars

Weird, sometimes wonderful, but… just as often crazy-weird, as in if she was sitting across from me telling me these stories, I would either suspect she had taken some magical mystery tour courtesy of Timothy Lear’s medicine cabinet, or she needed drugs of another kind.

“books and roses” – This was my favorite, and the reason I kept reading the remainder of the stories. What’s not to like about a story including a mysterious library and a locked garden?

“A library at night is full of sounds: The unread books can’t stand it any longer and announce their contents, some boasting, some shy, some devious.”

“sorry doesn’t sweeten her tea” – rock stars and their bad behaviors

“It’s a nice house for Ched too, in that it’s big and he got it on the cheap, and anyway he’s not really comfortable in overly normal situations. As it is he hears voices. Nobody else hears these voices but they’re not just in Ched’s head, you know? In this world there are voices without form; they sing and sing, as they have from the beginning and will continue until the end. Ched borrows their melodies: That’s the music part of the songs he writes.

“is your blood as red as this?” – creative tale about puppets and puppetry.

"You told me about how stories come to our aid in times of need. You'd recently been on a flight from Prague, you told me, and the plane had gone through a terrifyingly long tunnel of turbulence up there in the clouds. 'Everyone on the plane was freaking out, except the girl beside me,' you said. 'She was just reading her book--maybe a little faster than usual, but otherwise untroubled. I said to her: 'Have you noticed that we might be about to crash?' And she said 'Yes, I did notice that actually, which makes it even more important for me to know how this ends.”

“I was on my way out and they thought they were helping me; instead they turned motion and intelligible speech into a currency with which personhood is earned.”

“drownings” – a “warning” tale, not wonderful but okay.

“There’s that difficulty with delirium too: You see it raging in another person’s eyes and then it flickers out. That’s the most dangerous moment, it’s impossible to see something that’s so swiftly and suddenly swallowed you whole.”

“presence” – bizarre … like an episode of Twilight Zone based on something like Dr. Phil’s couple’s counseling...

“Two minutes until midnight. She looked around at the pale blue walls, then out of the window and into the communal garden; there was a night breeze, and the flowers were wide-awake.”

“a brief history of the homely wench society” – This was okay, more relatable but to me didn’t feel as if it fit in with the others.

“dornicka and the st. martin’s day goose”- just okay

“freddy barrandov checks…in?” I enjoyed almost everything about this story.

“Yours is a pitiful existence. I had you followed for six months and all you did apart from turn up to play in a sandpit with infants was go to galleries, bars, the cinema, and a couple of friends’ houses. What kind of person are you? I spoke to your weed dealer and he said you don’t buy that much. You are without virtue and without serious vice. Do you really think you can go on like this?”

“ if a book is locked there’s probably a good reason why, don’t you think?” - My second favorite in this collection, with a weirdly wonderful ending.

"A strange but beautiful mix of characters and situations"
By Bookreporter
Helen Oyeyemi has gained international acclaim for her earlier novels, including MR. FOX and BOY, SNOW, BIRD. Granta named the Nigerian-born writer one of the best young British novelists in 2013. Since her earliest writings, Oyeyemi has been inspired by a variety of folk and mythological sources, utilizing the language and imagery of classic folk and fairy tales in new and sometimes unsettling ways. Now, in her new story collection, WHAT IS NOT YOURS IS NOT YOURS, she continues to offer a strange but beautiful mix of contemporary characters and situations with classic folk and fairy tale motifs.

It might be a bit of a stretch to call the nine stories that compose WHAT IS NOT YOURS IS NOT YOURS “interconnected,” although many do share moments of commonality, including some characters and imagery. Most notably, virtually all the stories contain imagery of locks and keys, which sometimes lie at the center of the plot but just as often serve a more metaphorical purpose.

In the opening story, “Books and Roses,” a woman who was left at a monastery as a baby with a key to an unidentifiable door falls in love with another woman who has been left a key by a former lover, and both ladies must discover what doors their keys unlock --- and why. In “Drownings,” a man desperate to save a kingdom --- and a young woman --- from a tyrant throws a key into a fire, but his actions may destroy more lives than they save. And in “Sorry Doesn’t Sweeten Her Tea,” a man takes care of a possibly hostile fish while its owner is overseas. The house is called “The House of Locks,” and the housesitter finds the house’s properties unsettling: “Because of the doors. They don’t stay closed unless they’re locked. Once you’ve done that you hear sounds behind them; sounds that convince you you’ve locked someone in.”

This kind of vaguely supernatural presence also runs through the stories, from the sentient puppet who narrates the second half of “Is Your Blood as Red as This?” to the “Little Red Riding Hood”-inspired story “Dornička and the St. Martin’s Day Goose” (in which the “wolf” may also be more metaphorical than actual).

As in her previous fiction, Oyeyemi draws on a variety of geographic locales and folk traditions in these stories, although many of them share an eastern European feel, from the names of the characters to their setting to the kinds of imagery that is employed. Oyeyemi’s narrative voice, her ability to write quasi-folkloric prose with such authority, can make occasional contemporary references (such as mentions of Google searches or the Eurovision song contest) seem startling. These brief interruptions to Oyeyemi’s classic tropes and deliberately old-fashioned prose style serve as reminders to readers that great stories, timeless stories, can still arise from modern times, and that the language and images of folk traditions can still, at times, take us by surprise.

Save Your Money!
By Everett DeHart
I'm a pharmacy tech student and this text was provided as part of the course. The Instructor warned that there were several typo's and things... Five STRUGGLING chapters into it, it went into the trash and I replaced it with Pharmacy Calculations by Mike Johnston. Most of us learned about fractions, percents, etc. in grade school. How this author can take something that simple and complicate it to the point you're confused on doing simple math is beyond belief. Conversion factors on one page contradict conversion factors on another, yet you're supposed to use them to solve problems? The quizes at the end of each chapter only have answers to the even numbered problems? That may be the good news as a lot of answers are incorrect or typos. Pay someone to check the book for mistakes.
By A. Kang
I'm writing a review for this book as a warning to others in the hopes that you don't buy this book. I'm studying for the National Pharm Tech exam and this book as so many mistakes that it is seriously pissing me off. Do they not bother to check for simple mistakes? Every chapter has a mistake, this is not an exageration. The book will contradict itself right on the same page. For example, the book says that 6oz is a cup. Then in the practice question ON THE SAME PAGE, the correct answer is 8oz for a cup. Mistakes like this are very common. If it were a couple I can forgive it but it has too many. If you start believing the book, you will learn the material incorrectly. Some of the medication information is wrong. The only reason I caught it is because my wife is a registered pharmacist and she caught the mistakes. So I was learning the wrong information which would of made me fail the exam. I double checked on the internet and she was right, the book has mistakes.

Just beware of the book if you decide to buy it. But with too many mistakes on the practice tests, it just gets fustrating not knowing if you really did get the right answer.

FIND ANOTHER CALCULATIONS BOOK. STAY AWAY!

Needs more work.
By Nancy L. Needham
I was expecting more problems and less explanation. As a Pharmacy Tech Instructor I think we need more problems for the students. The instructor can explain how to do the math. This is a new text (copyright 2007), but the author includes a label from Propulsid. This drug has been off the market for 5-6 years. Also, instead of using the D,H, Q formula I prefer Dimensional Analysis (aka Unit Cancellation). I recommend Math Calculations for Pharmacy Technicians a Worktext by Fulcher.

The Films of John Cassavetes: Pragmatism, Modernism, and the Movies (Cambridge Film Classics), by Ray Carney

The Films of John Cassavetes: Pragmatism, Modernism, and the Movies is the first book to tell in detail the story of a maverick filmmaker who worked outside the studio system. Providing extended critical discussion on six of his most important films (Shadows, Faces, Minnie and Moskowitz, A Woman Under the Influence, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and Love Streams), Ray Carney argues that Cassavetes' work is a distinctly life-affirming form of modernist expression that is at odds with the world-denying modernism of many of the most important art works produced in this century. Cassavetes is revealed to be a profoundly thoughtful and self-aware filmmaker and a deeply philosophical thinker, whose work takes its place in the American tradition along with the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and William James. The six films treated here emerge as expressive interpretations of the bewildering challenges in contemporary American cultural experience.

Review
"...it is a special event...when Carney publishes a book that illustrates what film study and analysis can be at their most visionary and inspiring. Carney is clearly a born teacher....Every page of The Films of John Cassavetes is informed by the passion of a man on a mission to change the way movies are thought and written about. Carney has an extraordinarily exalted vision of the function of cinematic art. Film is, for him, neither escapist entertainment and recreation...nor an intricate stylistic game played off to one side of life...but a way of exploring the most important and complex aspects of human experience." Diane Cherkerzian, The Boston Globe

"One of the most exciting aspects of this book is the impression it conveys that absolutely everything is open to reappraisal and revaluation....Not the least innovative aspect of Carney's writing is the degree to which it is radically interdisciplinary, and he sketches a series of strikingly original (yet persuasive) connections between Cassavetes' work and that of other American artists and thinkers....I turned the pages, almost holding my breath at moments, startled by the depth, power and unexpectedness of the argument, emotionally suspended between exhilaration and fear." Diane Cherkerzian, The Boston Globe

"...reflects not only years of devotion to Cassavetes' work but also numerous conversations and interviews that the author had with the filmmaker, his colleagues and his friends....Carney's descriptions...are reinforced by the many photographs he provides of Cassavetes energetically working on scenes and individual moments with his actors and crew....Far from mere illustrations of the text, however, these 'inside photos'--published in this book for the first time--reinforce the focus of Carney's book." Filmmaker

"Carney's approach to Cassavetes is shaped by the depth and discipline of scholarly analysis, and also by the out-and-out enthusiasm of a movie-lover writing about some of his favorite pictures." The Christian Science Monitor

"There is plenty of sturdy analysis here and. . . Carney makes a strong case for his subject." Times Literary Supplement

The Noam Chomsky of film's expressive manifesto.
By langdonboom
This book changed my life. It wasn't a pretty experience, either. I argued with it. I dismissed it. I fought it tooth and nail. But in the end, reading this book and seeing the films it discusses represented the single most important educational, emotional, and artistic experience I've ever had. I tell you, the thing is a mental a-bomb. I broke down. It literally caused me a crisis of the faith regarding everything that I though I knew or held dear about filmmaking, and maybe even the world. I lost friends. Not only does this book chronicle in deep, loving detail the films, working methods, and world-view of one of the most important (yet underappreciated) filmmakers in American cinematic history, it is a manifesto, articulating and illustrating an entirely original and brain re-wiring theory of flimmaking, present in the films of John Cassavetes; a theory at odds with 99% of the films EVER MADE. Everything you though you knew is suspect in the glaring light of Ray Carney's prose. Forget Citizen Kane. Forget Cassablanca. Forget Vertigo. They're like fingerpaintings next to a Piccaso. Neither lightweight nor academically verbose for its own sake, Carney's tone is as friendly as if he were chatting with you over a beer, yet what he says is nothing short of revolutionary. It was simple: I was blown away. Finding precedent for Cassavetes' work in the long-standing American Romantic tradition of Walt Whitman, Emerson, William James, John Dewey and others, Carney's book gives film its proper due as the greatest 20th century artform. An artform, it suggests, still in its infancy. What Cassavetes' films did to me was simple and profound -- they showed me a new way to expereince the world. A new attitude. A new awareness. Carney did the same thing, articulating those ways, and celebrating them with the reader. I read a lot of film books, but this is the beat-up, dog-eared one I go back to time and time again. No plain-jane film text is as insightful or inspirational. Read it and you will never be the same again. I wasn't.

A worthy ordeal
By Martin Doudoroff
I'd like to corroborate Matthew Langdon's review (above or below this one). I had the advantage of having Ray Carney as a professor at Boston University. By some stroke of genius (possibly by administrative accident), all entering film students were required to take a survey course from him on film art before taking anything else. Carney started with warhorses like Hitchcock's "Psycho" and made the roomful of us (vocally) do exercises during the screening that exposed the highly polished but rather ridiculously superficial artifice of the "classic film". We all thought he was crazy. Here was this man -- that one friend described as a combination of Andy Warhol and Orville Reddenbacher -- unsubtly undermining a number of the most globally revered films. He then paraded a host of highly experimental films (many from the library of Congress that practically noone outside of a Carney class has ever or will ever see) before us that were appallingly difficult and often downright confrontational. It's pretty safe to say that practically none of us really "got it" until long after that semester, possibly years. At some point I did. Carney loves film just like we all do, however he had recognized something that we (and, most likely, you, too) had not, that film can be so much more than anything we had imagined (or yet been exposed to). That's largely what he wanted to show us in this class. Film is still a nascent art, highly immature in scope and depth. So far, Cassavetes -- one of the EASIER filmmakers Carney introduced us to -- is one of the handful of film artists that has done something deeply new with the form since its inception. If you develop an interest in Cassavetes, you will find this book essential, and you will return to it after every screening.

a refreshing, provocative analysis of some beautiful work
By A customer
Carney offers an utterly convincing critical analysis of the great artist's work. The author compares Cassavetes to Ralph Waldo Emerson and John Dewey in consciousness-shifting ways useful to anyone interested in media, culture, philosophy, and art.
Now, Carney, the leading Cassavetes expert, MUST (I hope) offer the definitive biography of this great artist: clearly one of the most original, courageous, and mature American filmmakers.
See Cassavetes's work on video ("A Woman Under the Influence" and "Love Streams" are absolutely wonderful; shockingly good), and then read this book. I heartily endorse it and sincerely hope for that definitive biography.
Viva Cassavetes (and Carney)!

Review
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, January 12, 2013By Donna Jean - This review is from: A Convocation of Kings (The Coming Storm) (Kindle Edition)The authors writing skills are exciting, informative, very creative. I started with The Coming Storm and read both books within the week. Could not put it down and was angry when I had to wait a whole day to get the A Convocation of Kings. Love paranormal, but not particularly fond of wizards, find it frustrating. In the case of these two books, I was thoroughly entertained, job well done.

From the Author
A Convocation of Kings is the sequel to The Coming Storm, but can be read as a standalone novel on its own.

From the Inside Flap
A weird, ululating baying sounded behind him, drawing him from his reverie. He hadn't thought he had much time, but he hadn't thought to have so little. They'd found his scent far more quickly than he'd expected. With all he'd heard and seen over his long life though, that sound sent chills up even his spine.
It was a new thing - a cry such as he'd never heard - he who'd lived far longer than any other Elf, and far, far longer than any man. He'd known fear many times. This, whatever it was that sought him, was different.
Talesin straightened in the saddle and turned to look behind him.
He stared, stunned, his sight offended by what hunted him.
Low things, they were larger in size but more upright than the weasel-like kobolds, little more than a mass of ugly snarling teeth and claws, vaguely man-like for all their four-legged loping stride, with greasy black fur. They were quick, racing behind him on his trail in pursuit.
In all his years he'd seen nothing like them.
With one hand wrapped in Chacai's mane for balance, Talesin let loose a mage-bolt with the other.
It struck in their midst, bowled the creatures over to a chorus of shrieks of fury and growling howls. Then they scrambled back to their feet to race after him again. It stunned him that they took the mage-bolt almost in stride and recovered so quickly.
These were new things and he hadn't thought to see anything new of their like again.
New creatures of the Borderlands.
The situation was far worse than he'd feared, than he could have imagined.
Dark wizards were at work once more among the creatures of the borderlands. That was yet another source of horror.
Both Elf and wizard, he was old, far older than any other Elf had been or had any right to be. Elves were long-lived, wizards as well, and both had stretched Talesin's life-span far beyond any other in Elven history.
In all that time he'd seen much, horrors such as no one, Elf, Dwarf or man, should ever see, but nothing like these. They were like a pack of hunched, misshapen wolves but there were many, many more of them. Looking behind was like watching darkness boil over the earth in a thick gleaming flood. He had a glimpse of something that raced behind those low creatures as a hunter of men would ride to foxhounds. The creature looked something like a horse but wasn't a horse...and the rider...
Even Talesin quailed at the sight.
Age tells on all if one has years enough, although Elves didn't show it as men did. He feared his mage-bolts didn't have the power they once had. Nor his sword arm when it came time for it. With his magic and his sword, though, he tried to hold them off long enough. It was all he could do.
Long sharp claws shredded hide and flesh as the creatures closed on them. Blood flew.
Talesin couldn't Heal Chacai on the fly, and himself not at all, he could only hope the valiant animal could hold out long enough to save them both. Or at least pass their warning to those who must hear it...
Their frantic, desperate flight was a losing battle he knew, but they fought it, he and Chacai together, for as hard and as long as they might.

Disappointment squared
By Amazon Customer
I read the first book in the series and got really excited. Got this book immediately after I was done with the Coming Storm and I felt like someone sucker punched me!!!

The description of Ms. Douglas says that she is a genre-crosser. I personally think that she should PICK A GENRE AND STICK WITH IT!!! Especially when we are talking about a series of books. The first book was a nice fantasy novel while this one turned into a romance novel, including drawn out scenes of sex and everything that goes with it. I do understand that the love and connection between different characters is an important part of the plot and the whole universe she created, but SERIOUSLY!!! I was skipping large chunks of the book just to get back to the actual plot (that was still pretty interesting).

In the end I did finish the book because I wanted to find out the end of a story I was following for weeks at this point, but I will NEVER EVER read another book by this author!!!

Two for one review
By jmrivera
I read The Coming Storm ans enjoyed the book and the characters so much that I immediately bought the sequel, A Convocation of Kings. In the first book I was so happy to see that she could write an exciting adventure story without resorting to the use of descriptive sex scenes or foul language. In the second book, four of our heroes find wonderful life partners among their group. However I was disappointed that too much time was spent describing the intimate relations of the main two characters. Once or even a couple of graphic descriptions pretty much fill the reader in on how well suited they are to each other. I love romance, but I do not need to be in bed with the couple to appreciate how in love they are. It seems a form of lazy, repetitive writing, not holding up to her earlier promise. Otherwise, it was another good story with like-able, admirable heroes and hideously horrible villains. I will consider reading more of her books.

Intriguing Conclusion to A Fantasy!
By Marydon
As the second book, in a fantasy series, this is an excellent conclusion. I found the story well developed and holds the reader's attention. I fell in love with the characters. The "bad guy" had the proper amount of suspense and intrigue. Well written and fun, hard to put down. Congratulations to the author, I will probably read other books by you. Thanks for such excellent entertainment.

An ABSOLUTE must-have if traveling with kids to Cambodia!!
By MN
If you are traveling with kids to Cambodia, these guides are a MUST! We visited with our 8 and 6 year olds, and the “Cambodia Kids!” activity books not only taught the kids a lot about Cambodia in general, but gave them fun, independent activities to do while visiting Angkor Wat, so that we adults could also enjoy the temple.

The book is organized into “before you go” and “while there” sections, and includes age-appropriate stories, activities, and facts. The kids LOVED having their own guidebooks and were so excited and engaged throughout the trip. My 6 year old son really enjoyed doing the scavenger hunt activities at the temple & coloring in the pictures in the Cambodia Scout Guide. The instructions were simple enough that I could give him quick directions, and he would stay occupied with each activity for awhile. My 8 year old daughter (who had the Cambodia Trailblazer Guide) loved reading the story and doing the drawing and writing activities. I love that the books also encouraged them to engage with the culture—teaching about how to greet others, the foods that are eaten and even how to use a squat toilet!

THANK YOU Greenfeet Guides—please write more!
